Accelerator stall preventer??

I've had a few 1969 & 1972 Cutlasses over the last few decades, I just picked up an original 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass S convertible that came from the US...Very solid, original condition car. On the motor, just in front of where the accelerator connects to the carburetor there is a "pump" or "valve" that has a wire on it. I was told that it will stop the car from stalling when you let off of the accelerator too quickly. There is a wire on the end of it that leads to nowhere...Where does that usually plug into? What is the proper name of that unit so I can look it up?

Depending on year it can be called: dashpot, anti-stall solenoid, anti-dieseling solenoid. Some years they're used to increase idle speed on airconditioned cars when the compressor is running. Other years to decrease idle speed when the engine is shut off so it won't diesel.
Suggest getting the factory chassis service manual for your specific year car. It will tell you what it was called and how it functioned for that year. Most were wired to a switched 12v power source that was powered when ignition switch was in RUN position. Others were tied into the airconditioning compressor wiring. All depends on what the engineers used it for in that specific year.
