72 U code, overflow tank?

Did the 455 cars come with a stock overflow tank?

It is my understanding it was a dealer fix for overheating big block cars, installed no charge upon complaint.

So what is used as an acceptable tank? I just discovered my car has a spray bottle for an overflow, not something I want to keep.

Dorman sells many varieties of overflow tanks. Many of us have adapted one to our vehicles. Mine was about $20. This wont do if originality is a concern.

Since the cars didn't come with one originally it seems anything could be stuck on there as nothing would be considered original. I like the $20 option much better than the $230 option.

There was a GM designed system. Fusicks sells a replica. This is what could be considered an original-style replica of a dealer accessory.

Reservoir Package, technically listed for the 1971-72 cars. Interestingly, for 1970-earlier, all BBO A-body cars had the windshield washer tank mounted on the passenger side inner fender due to the larger R71 battery. This conflicted with the overflow tank placement. In the 1971 model year, The washer tank stayed on the driver side for A-body cars with BBO and RPO Y72 HD cooling. I believe the 71-72 tanks have a notch to clear the corner of the R71 battery.

me too!

there are also many options availible on ebay, ive seen some nice aluminum ones that may cost more than the plastic dorman tank, but look more modern.

I put the Fusick 200 dollar one on my H/O. The bracket is good, the bottle is good, the hoses are good, the lid fits tight but is a little unfriendly.

I upgraded to more sping clamps and used machine screws and nylocks over sheet metal screws for assembly.

I was lucky and found two or three factory tanks at flea markets. I bought two new ones at the dealer for my four speed cars. The hard part is finding the factory bracket.

For 35 years I’ve been using OE washer tanks as overflow tanks on small block cars (apparently), mounted exactly like the washer tank on the right fender liner in Joe’s diagram. IIRC some have been black, some “white” depending on the donor car’s model year. Worked and continue to work like a charm but not gonna get you any points at the Olds show.
