This US diesel emission thing's been going on for years, and nothing to do with taxes. True, fuel taxes are a big contributor to road construction, but we need good roads, and the government will surely find another way to tax for them. US emission requirements are much stricter than other parts of the world, especially CA, with cold start emissions being a big deal. Also, Blue-Tec diesels require Urea injected from a seperate tank, kinda like water injection, which Americans aren't to good about keeping up. Keep in mind the US market, where manual tranny's aren't nearly the thing like europe. Doubt a 1.6L diesel slush box, would sell much here.

Urea injection is in use now with VW/Audi here in the USA along with other makes. It's cheap and lasts quite awhile. There is a dash indicator to tell driver when they have 300 ish miles left on the fluid. If they let it run out the car won't start so there is an incentive to fill it. Just last week or so a couple got 82 mpg in a stock VW TDI diesel using normal good driving practices. The USA version TDI is a tough little engine.

this world's enviornment is going to **** anyway....let us save money for god sake!!! i have a friend who has been talking about this for years, he's really into conspiracy's and government rebellion. now i see these stories surfacing about these incredibly efficient vehicles that the US says no no. it's really a shame.

Europe is catching up fast, Japan also has emission laws as tough as CA.
My fiance drives a diesel peugeot as a cab, it has a particulate filter and is acknowledged as one of the best small diesels in the world. The emissions are probably cleaner than the air going into the filter.
