72 Cutlass 4-Door What Is It Worth

Need your help, this car is for sale locally and the gentlemen is asking $5000 for this 72 4-Door Cutlass.

Car runs and drives. It has rust at the bottom of the doors where they meet the fenders and has rot at the bottom of the rear window along the filler panel. The trunk lid is gone and has been replaced by a maroon trunk lid that is rotted along the bottom. Car is green in and out. There is a profile picture of the car for some reason came out in black and white but the car is green with a white top. It has a 350 2bbl with an automatic transmission. Is he asking too much?

Thanks

My .02 Yes he is asking too much. There will be much more rust under the vinyl top. I have seen rust free 4 doors hard pressed to make 6-7000. In texas you could do much better with rust free car. $1500 would be closer and after $10,000 in work you will have a $7,500 car.

I agree, more doors just will not bring the same money as a 2 door in the same condition. Runs and drives or well maintained mechanically is my question? Basically you are looking at a money pit that will not return the financial love anyone shows it. To me the car in this condition is worth what Mark threw out there and he is absolutely right that the owner thinks its probably worth way more. If you really want it, show some interest and leave him your phone number, and wait a while. His price will come down.

IMO, a rusty 4-door is a parts car... $1000/$1200 depending how good front end sheet metal is and if it has a good running 350...

Looks like an impound lot

A. It's green and so is the interior.
B. 4door. Trunklid has already been switched for rusty.
C. Vinyl top=rust.
D. I see 2 door cutlass ads everywhere for 5-7 thousand with modifications and much better condition.
E. Green is a narrow market but the track helps. Not much.
D. 2500.00 offer if fenders are rust free, frame not shot, trunk floor and floor not rusted and trim, grills, etc are sellable. Part out is your friend on this one unless you or a buyer love green so offer part price and hope for love of green sale.

retract my 2500.00 guess

cruzin66 nailed it. 1000 to 1200. the green is what reduces some value. Parting out value includes condition, color, lack of rust, demand. As I said, that car looks like it's sitting in an impound lot. Lowball.

Problem is that a lot of the car doesn't interchange with anything other than 4 doors. front inner door panels: 4 dr or some wagons, external trim windshield upper & lower are the same as other models & sides are slightly longer (trimmable), bumpers and front fenders of course,Frame only fits 4 doors. You do have some nice looking items if you want to part it out. But you will never come close to 5K doing that. If it drives & steers & stops, I see $500-750...maybe $800

Just my opnion

I do know someone in Chicago with the same exact car in mint condition, could probably use some parts as back-ups. It is sure hard to find four door parts now-a-days. Though mostly because no-one is looking for them. Just because there are few left out there doesn't mean they are in demand.

The, Deck lid and Radio/8-track are whats worth the most (and maybe hood/front end) so yep I agree 1,200

edit: gotta love that interior - pretty nice condition 1972 designed all over it. Also those AC valences for the 8-track are worth something too!!

Is the seat pattern a factory cloth? It looks different than the floral pattern I have seen on other 72 Cutlass'. Maybe they were Cutlass Supreme?...

From exterior and interior pics the car is a 71, not a 72. It's the base Town Sedan and not very desirable. The only nice options I can see are the AC and tape deck. With all the rust you've described, this is not a car you want to buy. As others have stated, it's grossly overpriced.

Gary, with respect it's not the green that devalues it. The fact that it's a 4 door model 3669 kills it. A CS 4 door would be leaps and bound over this car but still wouldn't command $5,000 in this condition. The front tag says it's a TX car so it might (MAYBE) have some solid metal underneath but I wouldn't hold my breath considering what I can see in the pics.

I don't think the car looks that bad. Of course, I'm from the north where our cars rust up to the windows.

It looks to have a painted top. Rust on the bottom of the doors is not insurmountable nor is the rust behind the back window. Can't really see that back quarter and of course the floors, but this would make an excellent grocery getter or entry into the hobby.

But no, 5K not even close. Maybe half if the floors and trunk are good and it runs well.
