72 Auto Console to 4 Speed

When I got my 72 442, it was disassembled. It was converted from an auto to a 4 speed, column, Z bar, tunnel hump, etc. It also came with an auto center console.
I've seen the conversion pieces to put the 4 speed boot on the console, but I'm not sure what's involved with modifying the console. I've only found pics of the finished product.
Does the console have to be cut beyond the area of the center woodgrain insert? From the pics of the big moulding, it looks like it may need to be cut nearly in half.
Thanks

You will end up cutting out allot. If you acquire the new insert and boot it will all make sense to you, as were to cut and how deep.

The FSM shows how to cut it.

I did mine, and a new hacksaw blade works fine.

If you turn the console over, there are lines on where to cut.

The plastic pieces for the top plate are different from an automatic.

The Parts Place sells the conversion kit. The only issue is the pot metal boot retainer is cheesy.....Mine broke.

I replaced it with a GM piece.

Hmmm, I'm going to feel guilty cutting this up. Maybe I should just go with a floor shifter. The console is not terribly useful, but they do look kind of cool.
I'm guessing you're referring to the lines in the second photo on where it's cut?

Yes, you would cut 90 degrees across the console, and snap each piece out where the molded line is.
