71 Cutlass Aftermarket Cd Player

Hey guys, I'm looking to install an aftermarket cd player and wanted to see some of your installs and ideas. I still have an original radio in the car and thought about not cutting. I was looking towards putting it under the stock radio and I didn't like the way the aftermarket under dash kit looked. Any idea on my other choices. I have a Pioneer cd player with bluetooth. Thanks

is it a all in one unit? old school install would be inside the glove box. if its a standalone changer put it in the trunk or under the front seat just make sure you got good seat springs so it dont get crushed

Then you need to look at Randy's offering. It matches the design of the original 8 track and can be custom made to suit your needs. Also can be used to mount aftermarket gages. Have a look through this thread. Scroll down through and see the various combinations. Randy also restores OEM units and the 8 track units. Hide your new stereo in plain site.

It a one unit pioneer like in the picture. I like that set up with the gauges, looks nice. How are you guys installing it in the dashboard. Meaning what is holding it in there being that the dash board is just a piece of cardboard screwed down.

Your dashboard is made out of cardboard???

Usually 4 screws do the job not sure in your case.

70cutty what ever that material is when you buy one. I just don't think it is sturdy enough to hold a cd player in there. Besides you would have to open glove box to work remote. I don't want a wired remote. But with that said thank you guys for the info on Randy. I have already emailed him and we are working on something. I have aftermarket gauges and you guys might have just killed two bird with one stone. I love that gauge/cd console. Again thank you guys for that info.

Oh, OK no I understand, you are talking about installing it in the glove box.
I thought you were asking how to install Randy's unit under the dash.

Another option(purists will cringe now), what I did was I cut out the ashtray that's behind that door in the dash and installed the CD player inside there. When I don't want people to see it I just close that little door.

So you telling me that a standard radio can fit in the ash tray hole. Wow. I wouldn't thought it was big enough.

i have seen that its a trick little mod. one other good idea IMO is what I did instead of cutting or adding anything perminet I bought my self a Bose mini soundlink blue tooth speaker. it plays pandora, the loacal radio and any saved music right off my phone fits perfect on the center console when driving and you can stash it in the glove box or in the wifes purse when your out and parked. has a great long batter life too.

I am partial to the bose products more than beats audio or others. but I read good reviews on other bluetooth speakers

It barely fits but it fits. I like it there, it's accessible and I just close the little door and it hides it.

Since I don't smoke (cigarettes), I really have no use for an ashtray anyway.

I have the original radio, but up under the dash I have an 1/8 inch jack where I plug in my phone ( I've got any radio station in the world!).
In the trunk is an amp and sub.

There are companies that mod the old style radios to work with smart phones and MP3 players. These new MP3's can hold a lot of music and you can copy your CD's to them. I cut my dash years ago to fit a din style radio/cd. It has an aux jack now I just use the MP3 with it and haven't plugged in a CD in years.

Yeah cd players are now like 8 track and cassette extinct. I use bluetooth, to connect my phone and use Pandora and several other apps that have live and local radio stations. Plus I have a huge library of MP3's haven't touched a cd in years myself.

Behind the ashtray door is a great idea for this. I see this become more and more popular all the time. Your not cutting the dash and you still have all the space in your glove box. Very cool!
