71-72 442 w/o Ram Air...in Radiant Green with White Top
Hello All,
I am in the process of doing a frame off on a '72 Cutlass S that my dad purchased brand new which my brother and I found after he passed away. The car was, and will remain, Radiant Green with a white vinyl top.
I fell for a few pics of a 442 (W-30 I beleive) paint scheme that came on those cars without ram air. It looks like there are scallops on the hood with a lower stripe on the side.
I am trying to find a picture of one that has this paint scheme with radiant green and the white top but have been unable to find one and have spent tons of time on this site and others looking for one...I want to show the family and get approval before changing it up.
The green car is mine before restoration and the blue one is the closest I can find...any help or other ideas would be a huge help!
Ben

1971/72 442 w30s all came with the w25 hood and other appearance and performance goodies. Your 72 Cutlass S can easily be changed to look like a 72 442 because the non W30.cars (known as W29 442s in 72) all got the hood, body side and deck lid stripes like the blue car in your pic. If you plan to convert it to look and handle like a 442 you need to change the grills, lose the rocker stainless, and upgrade the suspension to FE2 for starters.in 72 442s were just an option package available with pretty much any engine choice, so even if yours is a 350 2 bbl, that would qualify for 72.
The stripe package you're looking for is available from Stencils and Stripes. It's also shown in detail in the 72 Cutlass Assembly Manual.

Guys thanks for all of the information and pictures. Allan thanks for the tec info as I am a bit shotty on that type of thing. I actually live about a mile from Speedway Motors and they used my frame in their Product Development lab to build out a pro-touring kit for A-Bodys they plan to offer soon...I'm loving the Wilwoods and the stance as well as the engine we are building now (don't worry its all Olds) so I guess I threw 'factory correct' out of the window awhile ago but its good info. Allen do you know if there are any special modifications in removing the stainless at the bottom of the car or just taking off the clips...the car is getting all new pans now and inner rockers along with wheel wells so now would be the time to switch it up if I'm going to do that. Any experience to see if you have more rock chip damage if you remove them? I did 4 years in an apprentice job in a body shop so to say I'm **** about paint work would be an understatement.
Rallye469 do you mind if I ask where you found that picture? I want to see if they have any other angles...that was EXACTLY what I have been looking for.
YukonOlds...that is a seriously sinister looking olds...if mine looked that great factory correct I wouldn't be able to do what I am doing. At the end of the day its a 72 S so I don't feel bad being 'artistic'.
Thanks a million guys!
