'70 Tooth Rubber Nubs & Gasket?

Are the black rubber pieces at the bottom of the tooth on this '70 correct? I've seen these on a few cars, but more often than not they're not present.

And I saw Inline has a gasket available that fits between the tooth and the hood--is this also correct? I'll check my manual when I get home.

I would be interested to know too. I attached a page from the 70 assembly manual and it shows only the gasket. Maybe I'm missing a page that shows the nubs coming out of the bottom of the tooth.

They definitely came with a gasket between the tooth and the hood. Kind of funny you should ask about the little bumpers on the bottom of that hood tooth. I had exactly the same question when I saw that picture. I've been around 70 442's for a lot of years and I have never seen that before. I could be wrong, though

Revisionist History/Urban Myth......they weren't used. Gasket? - Yes. Rubber bumpers? - NO

How about the tooth is upside down. Four nibs, four holes in gasket.

What would those 4 bumpers touch? On my 70, the bottom of the tooth never touched anything other than the back of my head!

Yes - I've thought about having a molded foam rubber "slip on" pad made to deal with that pesky problem...would just need to remember to remove it before shutting the hood.

I have been around a long time too BUTT I have seen what looked like a gasket or bumper on the bottom of the 70 hood but nubs were going up into the holes not down. I have only seen one in my life time of 70 years. It covered the whole bottom like a bumper. NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN !!!!
I have another RARE item a horn relay cover of rubber used on big Olds cars. I still have it somewhere here.

I think it is up side down, should be on the bottom of tooth in pic.

Now that makes more sense. The pad is installed upside down, not the tooth.

Water pipe black insulated foam, or pool noodle cut to length and slit to the middle will work just fine. There is just enough tension in the rubber to clamp on to the front and back of the tooth, and the hole through the middle will cover the folded over tab at the bottom. Water pipe insulating foam is the softer of the two foams, but the pool noddle covers more area.

Gerald,
Those rubber covers came on EVERY '73-'77 Cutlass horn relay so unfortunately not that rare.

That's a great idea, they make large pipe pipe insulation in 3' sections, may be able to stretch a 4 or 5" diameter piece over entire tongue. Hit my head more times than can count, being 6" 4".

I was going to ask the exact same thing. They look out of place and serve no purpose that I can see

And then there’s this...

While we’re on the hood tooth topic, I have to share the pics I took of a hood support piece at the Homecoming a few years ago. This was on a sweet nugget gold W-30. Owner was super nice and said the contraption was on the car when he purchased it.

That contraption looks like a gusset added to reduce the vibration of the tongue to help reduce stress cracking. With the tongue being cast pot metal, they have a strong tendency to crack at the mount flange. Although not concourse correct, I can't say it's not a subtle way to add support to a car that actually gets driven.
