70 questions

I bought a 70 cutlass S for parts...its a strangely optioned car that was ordered, i have a few questions..

its a 350 2bbl, 3 speed manual on the column, A/C and MANUAL steer and manual drums....

are the manual steer ALTERNATOR brackets unique? on a GTO they are but I gotta say i never saw a set up like this before...

now some of the weird stuff

It was special ordered..its code 55 with a gold cloth interior...
Like i said 350 3spd with a/c and manual steer and brakes..
also has a power bench seat
and 5 15 inch ralleys...the correct grey SSII ive seen on 70s

i got the order sheet, the orig invoice and the window sticker..so no doubt the car came this way...

isway too rusty to build, so im using is for my 70F85 post car, i want the stick change over etc...weird car..

are the wheels special?
any help appreciated....

I never heard of a '70 w 15" wheels. Do they have bolt on caps?

The manual steering box might be in high demand for a W car, or a race car. Can you get pictures of some of this weirdness? Like the manual steering box, cowl tag, alternator brackets, engine bay shot, etc... Geeks like us want to know.....

Are the wheels 15" with a snap on center cap, or a bolt on? If snap on, they are likely from a '75 or later? If bolt on, they are from a '74 I believe, & if they are, I'd be interested in buying them from you.
I know other manual transmission cars & 455 cars had an extra triangulation bracket coming off the front bolt of the rear lower control arm. It is just a straight bracket that connects up to the frame. Check to see if yours has those. They are in demand also. You can reach under the car to feel for them, or lay under it & have a look see & take pictures. I'd be interested in some of the parts you don't use & have plenty of other parts to trade or cash.

if the wheels are really 15 x 7 then they are from a later year 73 and 74 if they have a bolt-on center cap - if they are snap on centercaps then thay are from 75 and later. either way nice rims to have - 15" bolt -on centrcap rims are rarer and worth a bit more than 14 x7 SSIIs

Yea, I don't know about the wheels being original for that year. Manual steering alternater brackets.?..don't know I've heard that one before in Olds speak. Sounds like a pontiac thing...

It does seem interesting to have the options you described. Just not crazy weird though. I wonder if an older buyer spec'ed that car out, that would be typical of the time frame.

Power seat and three speed on the column, and AC... pretty neat.

Standard V8 car with 3 options - Radio, A/C, and power seat - rare, but maybe the guy was broke with a short wife!

Yea a power seat, sounds like he didn't want to be fiddling for "her" setting after gettin out. He probably had to "give in" to her decision...it was that or the viking blue 442 parked next to it on the lot, with that silly wing on the trunk.

no triangulation brkts under the car, i reached under and checked

has manual drums

man steer box and brkts..you can see the box and in a diff angle you can see no PS pump...i looked on my 71 Convert and the upper brkts are diff for the alt...all of the a/c brkts are in the trunk with the compressor....

i looked at the window sticker and it says 14 in with full wheel covers with white walls..weird...the order sheet/invoice says ralleys w poly glass...weird...soo..i would assume they where dealer installed, i heard that happened alot, you want ralleys, you pay and they get them..or they where ordered and it didnt get them...

snap in centers, and i measured them they are 15X7..maybe someone put them on the guy that had the car bought it in 78 and drove it thru high school, they are painted grey like ive seen on 70s...so who knows on the wheels

if you got 15 in in 70 are the 15x6? or you could only get 14x7??

The brackets are the same. It just doesn't have the p/s bracket bolted to the bottom of it.

Those are 75 and later snap on cap 15" rims.

The 350 2bbl with 3 speed manual trans column shift was the base drivetrain on the Cutlass line in 1970, so not unusual. Most were optioned to add the AT, however. Manual steering and manual drum brakes were also the entry-level parts. Basically this is a bottom-feeder Cutlass that was probably ordered in the southwest where the A/C was mandatory. Other than on the 69 H/O, 15" SuperStock II/III wheels were not available until the 1973 model year (and would not have been snap-in centers), so someone added them.

In keeping a proper perspective, bear in mind that most cars were not ordered by the customer. By far, most were bought from dealer stock, either the dealer selling the car or from another dealer's stock.

It was not that uncommon for the dealer to do something like that. Why? See above.
