70 olds 455 timing issues

ok guys i got the timing tab on and it hooked up to timing light it was all the way to the right notch.... it was still knocking when turned off. ive been researching online about which way to rotate distributor to advance or retard the timing on an olds 455, i found that chevys are counter clockwise to anvance and have heard that oldsturn clockwise to adnace the timing. i get it to where it doesnt knock any more when shut off but the mark is off the tab to the left. or get it to where the knotch is off the tab to the right abd doesnt knock, on the tab seems to knock,, need help. please respond

You have the tab. With the engine running set the initial to 8° and start from there. you can advance it to 10° - 14° depending on what the engine likes, but I would probabaly stay no more than 12°.
