70-72 repo sport mirrors

Any feedback on this part? I've been told there are problems with paint adhesion. Has anyone ever experienced any problems?

Be aware that the 70 sport mirrors are one year only, and they are different than the 71-72.

i have a 70 repop mirror...and for a driver it would be OKish..but its very brittle..the base has broken/chipped 3 times since i bought it...and not really understanding why and it was painted buy the previous owner, and has held the paint for the 2 years ive owned it

nothing interchanges from repop to real correctly, either

side by side the repop..is smaller than a real one..very noticeable

I've been down this road and now pretty annoyed.
I got a pair of "real" mirrors off of ebay. The RH is a genuine unit based on the part #s, but the base gaskets don't fit it well. The LH? No one knows what it came off of. Can't find glass that fits it. They do mount properly and work, however.

Now, the 71/72 repop units commonly available are from OER and have a wide cross reference applicability. So the stock replacement glass doesn't fit them either. The bases have a strange design, requiring the brackets to be trimmed so they mount properly. Also have to drill out the mounting screw hole because they drill it at the wrong angle, preventing the mirror from being pulled tight against the door. The real icing on the cake is the cables were incorrectly assembled to the adjuster, so the LH mirror couldn't move and adjust properly. And the base gaskets they provide use a different locating tab than the Cutlass doors. The LH is assembled in an odd manner, so it can't be fully disassembled for paint.

In any case, I'd strongly recommend anyone take them down to bare metal for paint.

This topic has recently come up with my body shop guy. He has a 70 W31 in for some additional work including problems with the repop sport mirrors. As soon as they hit the Georgia sun the paint popped off of them in several places. Of course the immediate suspect is a bad paint process. It turns out though that the problem is actually the pot metal construction of the mirrors themselves. Apparently the direct, het sunlight caused the metal to expand unevenly and "blow" the paint right off the mirrors. It's really strange to see.

Bottom line for me - spend the time and money to find OE. Why have your beautiful new paint job ruined by repop mirrors.
