70-72 Cutlass Console disassembly Tips

Looking for Directions/Tips for removing the console trim item 4 and the lock cylinder items 19 & 20 without damaging any components.

You probably wondering why? I am salvaging 3 junky consoles to try to make 1 decent driver quality console.
.

The rivets are plastic. There is no way to disassemble the components without damaging them. I’ve used an exacto knife to slice off the heads, then use a 90 degree pick to push the rivets out. I’m currently in process of salvaging a console myself. Share your process and thoughts.. Sorry I missed you this past week.

Drill the four rivets out. I have a perfect replacement for them...send me a text and I'll send you a picture of the box.

I was able to carefully drill the centers out of the rivets on my other console. Once drilled, the rivets were easily removed. I believe that I can source nylon studs from the local hardware store to reinstall once I’ve finished polishing the trim out.👍

While I was cleaning up a spare sport wheel assembly, it occurred to me that the nylon rivets that hold the horn contact are identical to the ones that hold the trim to the center console. They are accessible through many vendors but this was the least expensive I’ve found. Others can chime in or debate if there is any differences.

Now that I’ve installed these Corvette Central nylon rivets, I can confirm that they are the same, both fit and functional.
