http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...6pLid%3D376992

How's this for a low mileage original 69 Camaro? 3 bodies found inside that went missing Nov 70. Authorities also found in the lake an older Chevy with 3 more bodies that disappeared in the early 60s. Very strange and mysterious

Yeah one car with bodies is enough but two cars? Yet there is several years that separate them. And they had to be pretty close together for both cars to be found.

People driving cars into boat launches is pretty common. It just happned to two women recently. The only reason they found the women's bodies is they called 911 as the car was sinking so they had a location from the cell phone pings.

Given that the two cars were found close to each other, but are suspected to have gone under years apart, suggests that it's "merely" a treacherous stretch of road, having claimed two cars in the same way in that period of time.

Not everything is murder and mayhem, gentlemen.

You could be right Seff , but I find it hard to believe that NONE of those people made it out of there vehicles after they went in the water .

Especially since the cars were undamaged and in only 12 feet of water.

I read the article and didn't see that they said the cars were close together. I would guess after you find one you'd be curious & keep looking around. They found them by accident while testing a new sonar.

I believe they did say that the two cars were side by side.

Anything's possible. If we knew how many other cars had gone in at the same spot, where the people survived, we'd better be able to judge the situation.

One of the aerial views shows the road very close to the edge of the lake. It will be interesting to follow the story as it unwinds. There was a similar story to this here in Fuquay NC a couple years back. During the drought when lake levels were low a couple fishermen saw a car at the bottom of a farm pond they were fishing in. When they dragged the car out they found a women who had been missing since the 50's. She left home for work as a nurse at a local hospital on the late shift and was never seen again. Probably fell asleep at the wheel!

Wow, do you have a link to a story online or anything? I'm in Willow Springs NC (which I'm sure you know is literally bordering fuquay) and never heard about it. I did however hear theres a 57 chevy upside down in the woods by the high school.

Howdy neighbor! Here is a link to the story. I had a couple of my facts and timelines wrong but the jist of it is correct.

Yeah I read about the sonar equipment afterwards also but after thinking about it they had to be pretty close to each other underwater or they wouldn't be close after they were pulled out. They surely wouldn't have dragged one of the cars around the lake to sit it beside the other. Only 12 ft of water? wow. Of course I guess cars can't get too far in before they bogged down mechanically and get stuck in the mud. Still a lot of parts that could be salvaged on the Camaro despite its circumstances and history if you aren't superstitious I suppose. If not just lenses, glass, and the grille. Parts that aren't vulnerable to rust. Wonder where the cars will eventually end up?

Isn't the trick to get your windows rolled down before you go under? Provided you are small enough and physically able to climb out of the window of the car while submerged.

Yes, it is. Pressure on the outside of the windows and doors will make it impossible to open either when the car is submerged. Either open door/window before submerging, or wait until the car is FULL of water so the pressure is equalized, and then open the window.

But nowadays most cars have electric windows and once the car goes completely under it would be unlikely to be able to get those windows down right? Water would quickly short out the electrical systems?

Water pressure is NOT going to keep you from rolling down a manual window , but panic may . You would have to act REAL fast or drown . I can't hold my breath for very long , especially if I had to do it all of a sudden .

I must admit that the test I saw (on Mythbusters of all places) didn't specify whether it was electric or manual windows - or I don't remember.

So much for salvaging the glass off the Camaro. You think that guy is checking the numbers on the carb or engine?

He may be looking for the VIN stamped on the block. I am sure the VIN tag is long gone.

My thought both were accidental... Who knows how the road layout was back then.. Even if layout was still the same at late and not being familiar with the area is a bad combination..

Once the car is submerged it will. Water weighs 62.4 lbs/cf. A window is about 2 sf. At one foot deep the window has 122.8 lbs of pressure. At ten feet deep the window has 1248 lbs of pressure on it. Once the car is submerged at depth you pretty much have to wait for the car to fill to open the window or break it before it fills up.

I would think the window would break before it had so much pressure on it that I couldn't roll it down , but it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong

My passenger window didn't break. Luckliy the driver's door blew open at impact, and he pulled me out.

RockyRiverPlunge1-December31977.jpg

The fire department got my door open to pull another friend out of the back seat. He had 4" of airspace between his face and the floorboard.

I'd think that you can roll a manual window down in any reasonable depth of water. Water pressure 12' under is about 6-psi. That's a lot of lateral force on the area of a window, but you're rolling perpendicular to that force.

In any case, I'm done studying underwater phenomena without scuba gear!

What kind of car is that? My first guess would be a 72-73 Ford Torino but the hub caps look like a 69-79 Pontiac Catalina. The air pocket on an upside down car is like the 67 Delmont of the Kennedy's. If Ted Kennedy would have got to a phone instead of hiding that woman may have lived like your friend did.

Wow it look like a bigger car in the water. Look like Pontiac's version of the Vega but I guess its more Nova like. Maybe a 75 with the catalytic converter and front end treatment. I got strong vibes those hubcaps were Pontiac. Lucky you all got out of that. The impact could have killed you. Doesn't look like the same car although the damage is consistent.

So long as the load is applied evenly and smoothly to unblemished glass ... glass can withstand one helluva load, automotive glass particularly so. One tiny chip tho ....

I think the photographers were more interested in seeing a 69 camaro more than anything else. Someone will profit off of those parts I guarantee you that.

Doubtful anyone will profit at all- The pics on CNN showed that they basically peeled the car apart to sift through it for any remains or clues. When they were done all that was left of the older one was the dashboard and front clip.... Camaro will have even less left when they are done since it was basically swiss cheese.

Besides that, why would parts from it be worth any more than the millions of other 69 camaro parts out there? Most likely it will go to the county dump when thye are done sifting it- in many small peices.

Its a very sad story regardless of what exactly happened.

I wonder how long a car made today would last under water . I would of been happy to put a 01 Chrysler Town & Country mini van that I use to own in there to find out .
