69 442 Carburetor Numbers

This is my carb number (#7029253) on my Fremont CA built 1st week of January 69 442. It appears the date code is 156th day of 1970? Reference charts show all 1970 carbs start with #704 not #702? I'm trying to figure out if this is the correct number for my auto trans car. I am getting different numbers from multiple source guides. A 69 442 buyers guide from hemmings muscle machines says #7029251 is the MT carb. Another guides says #7029251 is the AT carb (except W-30-, W-32). This same guide says my carb #7029253 is MT and W-32. Another reference says my auto trans car should have carb #7038251 and the 400 is 350 HP. I thought the auto was 325HP and the manual 350HP. My car is numbers matching, just trying to figure out what carb # is correct.
Thanks!

What you have is what is called a "service replacement" carburetor. If you had carb issues and took your car to the dealership (or perhaps even a automotive repair shop) back in the day, most wouldn't deal with rebuilding your original carburetor. They would just get a service replacement unit that has the same carb part number but was clearly manufactured after 1969. For a '69 original carburetor there is also an "RJ" code which I've heard is called a "broadcast" code. In my experience, I've noticed service replacement carburetors generally do not have that code. I believe the correct carb for your car as a 4-4-2 with manual transmission should be 7029253.

You are correct, Randy. As you noted, it should also have the RJ next to the 7029253 for an MT in a 4-4-2..

Crimson, is there a number punched on the driver side edge flange of the carb's base? There is usually also a Julian date code stamped there, like this. This is a 7028251 built on day 345 of 1967.

The 7029253 service replacement carb is probably the most common one out there. I have seen the following dates:

1560
1952
1962
0444
0514
0995
2226

The three drill or punch marks next to the carb number are also a sign that it's a service replacement carb and/or the carb has been rebuilt in the past

The correct carb for your 69 auto 442 is a 7029251 with a production date prior to your build date

This same guide says my carb #7029253 is MT and W-32
. 442 By The Numbers also confirms this for 1969.

Thanks for the info Mike. Now to decide if its worth $1500 for a 251 carb. Since this replacement carb process was common, maybe I will just stay with this carb.

the 7029251 is much more common. It was used on every auto 455 big car as well. They aren’t hard to find, there are just of lot of people with overpriced junk for sale that you have to weed through. I recently saw one listed for a 69 H/O for $1500. I’m not sure what makes it specific to the H/O except possibly the date code which it probably shares with hundreds of Delta 88’s and 98’s. You should be able to find a decent core for $100

heres one that was recently listed for $150

Nothing, but the seller claims that there are internal differences that he refuses to document, because, of course this is a big secret. The Rochester Big Book O'Carbs shows that all '9251s are exactly the same. Of course there's also the person who claims that 1968 Ram Rod carbs didn't get primary metering rods either.
