68-69 vs 70-72 fuel tank

I have a 68 tank that I wanted to use on a 72. Pulled off the 72 tank and discovered the standpipe assembly. Found out more about in my chassis manual. Question is will the 68/69 tank fit and if so, can I use the 68 tank and bypass the entire standpipe assembly? The neck is shorter so not sure if it will clear the bumper? Thank you

For anyone wondering in the future. The tanks are pretty much interchangeable except for the different venting locations/standpipe assembly. Went in without any issue.
