Depends where you want to start and how many $ you have to finish. Doing everything yourself you will put many hours into the project. You might even have to estimate how many years you have left to finish such a project. I started out restoring 442's in my 40's. Finished many projects. Lately health has taken a turn for the worse and I will not be able to finish a partially finished street rod or my son's 67 Cutlass. So that being said, $2500 is a good price if you have the time and money for such a project.

i figured it would be a good project for my grandson,he likes my old cars and he will be 8 this year so would have a good 8 years.also figured at 2500 if nothing else i could part it out if it's worse then originally thought.

My car started as a father and son project that went terribly wrong. My son lost interest very quickly when he realized that wanting an old car is very different than having one and trying to put it together. Its a lot of work and he didn't have that kind of commitment. $2500 is a great price but as Ed said, its a big project.

In May I bought a project 67 442 post car, has a 455 in unknown condition. Its a 4speed car, buckets, posi, low options and power steering manual brakes. Small amount of rot in trunk, floors good. All trim nice. needs interior redone. Worst is the rot around the rear wheel lips on the quarters. The louvered hood is nice. I paid 4000 for it which I thought was fair for what it is.

My price data point: 2005, 67 hardtop 442 automatic numbers match AC power windows bench seat 3.08 limited slip car. Body rust repaired, in primer, scaly frame, needs interior touched back up again and frame off to do it right, but not much body work, I paid 4000. Mine cranked but would not start, which was good due to a hole in the radiator.

If it's a complete car with minor rust it's worth at least 4, especially with the original engine. Less if it's a jacked up engine, or something really wrong like a 403, less for rust, and less for a fake.

Money is looking for a cowl tag that has a 5V in the options, which is trim for a 442. This works for all 442 plants except Fremont, if you see a bunch of 4 number codes, or whatever Fremont had, be more warned that it might be a glitzed up Cutlass. Only certain plants made 442s, Lansing made the most. I think Framingham made them too.

The 5V is the body authenticator. Other things:
Engine is a bronze colored E block with C heads, the right side head should say V------G numbers, this is of course dependent on an original, non boogered engine.
I think the trans was an OG coded TH400 for automatic. Not a Super Turbine 300 Jetaway. Make sure it says prndSl not prndl if automatic.
Fender, grille bar, trunk, and dash 442 badges.
Non notched headlight buckets.
The trunk trim bar and upper tailights were Cutlass units with black paint added.
Cutlass Supreme rear bumper with reverse lights, and the bottom big lights are brake lights along with the uppers for 4 total.
Boxed lower control arms in the back
Rear Sway bar.
It could be a convertible "heavy duty" frame sitting under the hardtop car (I assume it's a hardtop)
It could have a clutch fan with lots of blades and a radiator shroud. Or it could be the bolt on 4 blade fan. AC got the clutch stuff. So did heavy duty cooling.
I think the carb was 7027156.
louvered hood with no provisions for a spear.
fenders never punched for Cutlass emblems.
Standard rear was 3.08 I think. The code on the axle would be SC or SD, for open and limited slip for that ratio. There were many other ratios offered.
Rally wheel cars had clips for the lug wrench along the trunk lip.
442s were only Cutlass Supremes that year, no F85 or straight Cutlass versions.
Disc brakes up front was an option, 4 piston caliper, the 67 SSI would not clear them.

as i mentioned in the first post it is a 4 spd.does have both fender, grille and dash emblems, don't have pics of the back.does have the louvered hood, also it's faded bad and the paint is wore to the primer on the top and tops of the 1/4s and it does have the stripes on the fenders and door which look original so figure at least the front end has been spared any major damage.what do you mean by non.notched headlite buckets??also it has the chrome trim along the entire bottom and over the wheel wellsif i do end up with this it will be delivered basically sight unseen to me other then the few pics he has sent me.so checking for the rear sway bar or cowl tag will have to be done then.i figure with the hood and 4spd i can't go too wrong even if it turns out to be a cutlass.

Ok that makes sense. Here, look at this one some dude listed here a while back. See the stainless headlight trim and how there is a big notch in it in the center inside? The Cutlass had a huge grill bar that plugged into those holes.

The 442 has a thin grille bar that sits between them, so that piercing on the headlight trim is not done on 442 ones, and they command a premium. Typically, you see a 442 bar sitting there, with notched Cutlass headlight trims, because
they couldn't either A source it, B didn't know, or C, didn't care, when they clone.

I don't want to be a bad person "but" one has to establish a rapport with the seller in order for both getting a fair price. It's kinda like the "wind and the sun" story. If you go with a set in stone price and start nitpicking, good chance he's going to "firm" up against you on the price. I mean, if it's a 4-speed true 442, he won't have a problem selling it but at what price? **** him off and you'll be lucky to get it for his price. After you look at it, you need to decide how bad you want it. 4-speed setup, hood, good frame= $3k or more parting it out. Don't take my post wrong, I'm just trying to give my opinion to hopefully get you the car but imo, $2,500 is to low.

I would get him the $2500 as quick as I could. That is a bargain. As Kennybill said, you run a good chance of pissing him off if you nitpick the car. There will be plenty of other people more than willing to pay his price.

Does it matter that we haven't even seen the car that "needs restoration"? Im not too familiar with 67s but is there a chance it could be too far gone?
