I just got back from a 6000 mile road trip in my 67 Vista Cruiser. We left TN and took the upper route through Kansas and Colorado to Moab Utah, Canyonlands, Mesa Verdi, Hoover dam and Arizona and back through Texas, OK Arkansas and back to Tennessee. We drove right at 6000 miles, the most expensive gas that we had to buy was $6.67 in Colorado, at 12mpg that did hurt a little bit but we had expected that. A friend was with us, they were in a very nice 67 Chevelle wagon. We both had small issues with our cars, I had to replace my 1 year old fuel pump in a hotel parking lot, he broke a power steering hose but we were lucky enough to find a shop in Cortez Colorado to make a new one. I had a spare fuel pump with me and also a spare water pump that Im glad I didnt need, also my cheezy A/C bracket broke but he was able to force an iron connecter onto the broken stud to get it back together so my wife and I could have cool air on the way home. All in all it was a great trip, I would drive the old car on another long trip any time. Every time we stopped we attracted a crowd of people wanting to check out the cars, we felt like celebrities.
Im thinking about another trip next year, maybe up the west coast starting in San Diego and as far as we can go up north. I think the old 403 still has it in her. In 6000 miles it used 1 quart of oil and ran great except for when the choke sucked closed even though all 3 screws were tight. Next time I will change the oil at 3000 miles like I usually do, I didnt this time because I figured since it was mostly highway miles it would be ok, the oil still looked clean on the dip stick.
