324 and a 5-Speed!? Do tell!

 

My 55 has the holes in the X-member already. I thought they were original. One was rotted away pretty badly and took some rebuilding. I'm thinking of junking the Bendix Treadlevac power booster and going disc brakes on the front. That would open everything up for the dual exhaust.

 

You will run into other problems you may not know of if you switch to a modern master cylinder on the firewall there again all doable but not as simple as bolting a new unit in and going for it. You will need to reinforce and eliminate the air box on the drivers side to mount the master and change the swing peddle from something like a S10 chevy which will be designed to be a push style rather than the pull type of the Treadle Vac. then of coarse the spindle and rotor change. Or you could do the Olds Dad conversion which is a neat conversion of the below the foot board style adaption which if you have the skills is clean and the most original looking adaption I seen. I almost like this better than what Olds Dad did. I'm not sure which is easier though...

 

Present.....55' super 88 sedan....

 

Just rescued a 1956 Olds Super 88 2 dr sedan that was in a recycling yard to be crushed. I took it home changed the points and it runs perfect no smoke and no knocks. All lights work and even the horn. I paid $1300 for it but I think it's worth it.

They are boat anchor heavy but I wouldn't think much more than $450 for a complete car even in these high scrap price days...Tedd

 

About the same on this coast, Tedd. We scrap cars all the time in the $300-$500 range.

 

 

I need to fix the brakes, the booster is rusted and frozen up. Probably get it driveable and decide to keep it or sell it. At any rate it won't be destroyed now.

My brother just bought a '55 no-post Super 88 coupe. Blue/Silver. Needs brake work and manifold gasket. Add me to your '55 count.

Original owner worked at the plant in Georgia and bought it there, the second generation put in a 1976 Cutlass 455 engine & tranny. Third generation was not a car guy and needed the money. I paid $6500 not sure it was really a great deal because I have put $3500 into it already. I have no intentions to completely restore it, just trying to make it a safe driving survivor.

I'm looking for a rear bumper for my 56. Doesn't have to be perfect. Not worried about rust. Also in search of a set of fender skirts. I'm located in SE Wisconsin. Thanks

 

There's one for a '55 on EBay selling Guards, Center bar between Guards,and main bumper separate,but all items look good.Check to see if they will fit '56. Big Jim's in Texas will have skirts new. Larry

 

Thanks. From what I've looked at, it seems like the 56s are different. Correct me if I'm wrong. And are the skirts a one year only too?

 

Trax5688. I believe all '56 olds skirts will work . The '55 4door hardtop "88" ,and all '55 "98 skirts with the exception of the"98" 4 Door sedan will work.Some new skirts are fiberglass which are not as sturdy as metal ones. Larry

Anyone know if a Continental Kit can be taken off of a 1956 Olds Super 88? If so, how is it done? Thanks.

 

I'm sure that it could be. It was a bolt on kit to begin with. I don't believe you'd be missing anything once it's off.
