A 442 hypothetical

I don't have all the numbers off the car, yet. But, I know the car. Wondering what it could be worth.

1970 442, post car, Gold exterior, black interior. Bucket seats, Hurst dual-gate. PS, PDB, AC-not there. Numbers matching engine and transmission (so I've been told). Engine & trans. are fresh, interior is re-done, new paint on the car, SS II wheels, good chrome & stainless. Don't know the mileage off-hand. Has W-25 hood, too.

So, for starters, what could be the value on it? Just might have a chance at getting it.

Opinions welcomed.

Definitely going to need pictures but it sounds really nice. For what its worth, here is a link to all the gold 1970 442 that have been posted on my site at some time or another. On the graph when they were posted, you can put your mouse over the data points and see a thumbnail. Click on them to open the ad. You may be able to compare your car to some of these.

That's great feedback. Thank you. This one is a post car which really intrigues me. According to the data I have available, only 1688 were built in 1970. I still need to lay my hands and eyes on it again for a closer inspection now that it may be for sale and work has been done to it since the last time I saw it.

Joffroi,

That is an awesome price analyzer tool you have there! Never knew it was on the site, have a feeling I will be using it a lot more now so thanks for developing it!

I have tried to add a photo that was scanned as an attachment. The owner gave this to me last night we I saw him at the store. The car is not currently at his house. It's in a shop several miles away.

Good luck with your possible purchase. It looks good in that photo, but it might be dated.

Keep in mind the red license plates. It looks like all the cars have them in the photo. So, that dates back probably at least 10, maybe 15 years.

I understand. Thanks for the insight. I have actually seen this car in person no longer ago than 2 years and it appeared to be about the same as shown here. I will investigate in detail as time becomes available.

I was going to say the same thing. Obviously an old picture - Never do you see so many cool cars at once in public anymore. The blue car, is a 4-door cutlass supreme ?

Anyways I hope that it hasn't deteriorated in past years. If you saw the car a few years ago then it should still be about the same. Good luck.

Thanks, everyone. He may be advertising it out of town because he is attached to it and maybe doesn't want to see it after it's sold. Did not get that indication from him. But, I know he would probably rather not let it go and feels he has no choice right now.

Thanks Bill. I'm just having fun coding a few things here and there haha. If you have any suggestion on other tools, let me know.

@P518, That is a sweet looking car. Another thing you will find is although the Sports Coupe models are more rare, I have got the impression that most people still prefer the Holiday Coupe models. They don't like the bar in the window.

I'm mixed. I like love having all my windows down without any blockage on my 442, but I like the rarity and uniqueness or the Sports Coupe (don't care about how it is slightly lighter). That gold and black is just classic.

It may be more rare, and you may be intrigued by it, but don't expect the post cars to be worth more. The Holiday Coupes (hardtops) were not only more popular back in the day but also now -- making both coupes about equal in value.

I have NO IDEA what this car might be worth, but I'm going to put in my $.02 worth, anyway......

I previously owned two 1970 442's back in the day, the first being a post coupe with 4 spd and W25 hood, and the second being an authentic W30 hardtop with 4 spd, and disk brakes. Rear ends were identical 3.42 posi ratio.

There was absolutely NO comparison between the two; both ran great, went like a rocket, and handled well.....BUT....there was a VERY discernable difference in both braking and handling.....

The post coupe had drum brakes, which were basically useless in any high speed maneuvers or stops, but it FAR outhandled the hardtop W30 in any situation, even though the non-power disc brakes of the W30 were FAR superior to the drum brakes of the post coupe.

These are things you might want to consider in your purchase; I would personally go with the post coupe, regardless of other considerations like styling, open windows, rarity of production, etc.. The post coupe is BY FAR a superior automobile to the hardtop!! JMO......

Of the 1688 total 4477s for 1970, 1065 had the 3 speed automatic TH400. If its all there and as pretty as the old picture shows it and its solid as a rock I say you have a 20K car all day. +/- 5K. If its needs some work but the metals clean 12-15K...all of this is IMO

Thanks for addressing the price estimate. I appreciate it. I am hoping to be able to get a closer inspection of it before the week is over and then can make a full determination of the value versus what the owner may want for it.

Why is that strange? They were optional.
