394 spark plugs

changing the plugs on the 394 tomorrow, picked up a box of 8 ac delco r34s.

to keep it simple, are ac plugs good plugs?

are they better quality than* champions?

which brands do you guys use/recommend on for these 394s?

I know to gap them .030 and im gonna check the dwell/time afterward, just wanted some feedback before I put them in, I was really looking for a made in USA plug, but just like the most of them these days AC delco is not.

Thanks

AC's are what came in it new. I don't care for Champions. Only time I use them is in the lawn mower.

well im about to just put in the conventional ACs, im not to fond of autolite(made in mexico AC beats commie china autolite if you ask me). as for what the car came with, im sure the plugs are the same specs but AC sold out to foreign labor years ago im sure, and the new made in mexico ones aren't the same quality. but an old nos box of AC 44s is like $120.

I thought the early 394's
called for A/C 44's.

These are NOS and are
available if needed.

Well I have a box of R43S. that's what the parts stores have around me have and say it calls for. Will it make a difference?

Should not make a difference, A/C's are fine. I believe the R44s are discontinued and hard to find.

well the plugs are in. i put just a tiny bit of anti seize on the threads and a bit of di electric grease on the plug boots carefully get none on the plug contact.

when i went to gap them they were all pretty close to .030, just a sliver off so i just put em in even if its really like .031 shouldnt be a big deal right?

got the points at exactly 30 degrees and timing exactly 5 degrees. car starts and runs noticeably better.

The 43 is a colder plug but shouldn't hurt anything, and may actually reduce detonation.

The 63-64 shop books recommended 43 for "Starfire engines used mainly on highways and that see little to no slow speed driving". It also mentioned that 43s were susceptible to lead fouling in city driving, and I can vouch for that happening. Since leaded fuel is no longer commonly available, not a problem.

44s are expensive because Corvettes and GTO's use them too.
