350 rocket timing
I have a 79 cutlass i put a 69 gold 350 rocket in... it was a pretty fresh rebuild, but anyways i drove it about 10 miles, and sheared the dowel pin on the cam because the bolt that holds down the cam timing gear wasn't torqued down tight enough and they didn't use lock tight... the bolt backing out destroyed the fuel pump actuater, and the timing cover, which was shoved into the water pump fans, destroying it as well. i can't find a fuel pump actuater... can i usethe one out of the 260 i took out of the cutlass? because i know it's the same timing cover... and just making sure i time it right... do i point the timing marks on the gears at eachother, then once the chain is on get them both pointing tdc, which puts the motor on the compression stroke, and put the distributer back in pointing at #1? please help... thanks

Dang , what Luck !! Yes, line your timing marks on cam gear and crank gear together . that should put you on #1 not sure about the fuel pump eccentric. Maybe some one else will jump in here on that one.

I would really spend twenty bucks on a factory manual before I'd ask a bunch of guys I don't know on the internet how to assemble my engine (no offense, guys on the internet ).
Also, if you paid somebody else to build the engine for you (assumed from, "the cam timing gear wasn't torqued down tight enough and they didn't use lock tight") and they did it wrong, then shouldn't they be fixing it for you free of charge?

i was pretty sure i knew how to time it, i just wanted to get some feedback and make sure i wasn't backwards... i've used manuals as a mechanic, but a manual hasn't experienced real life situations. i've always found more help and answers from people on forums... and i bought the motor off a guy that built it and drove on it shortly before switching to chevy(his loss)..i only paid 300 bucks for it. he showed me a video of it running just before it was pulled... and i don't have that kind of budget to pay somebody to build a motor for me... i get to do everything myself. it ran great... i have headers on it and i bent my own pipes to my flowmasters, it sounds amazing... it's an all black hard top no rust, tinted windows all the chrome is in great shape, and i put 17 inch torque thrusts on it... pretty much a craigslist budget build
