3 point seat belts for convertibles

Hey guys,

I have read a few places that there was an option for 3 point seat belts for a 71 convertible.

Do any of you have them or a pic you can post?

Do any of you know of some aftermarket/repro sets that will work?

thanks, Gary

Also curious how these are mounted (if possible). Is there room for bolts in the top of the rear seat?

I believe they were for the front outboard seats, and the belt went to the side of the rear seat back and hooked onto the mounts for the convertible cylinders, so they went between the seat and the interior panel with the armrest. Shoulder belts were mandated for convertibles in 73 I believe, but I believe they were an option in 71 or 72. Not an expert on this.

I don't know if it was the same for '71, but my '69 4-4-2 convertible has the optional shoulder harness belt for the front bucket seats. Pictured below is how they are set up. When not in use, the belt from the rear mounts on the lower panel.

yep, that 's the same set up for 70 - 72. I have only seen a few cars with them but you can make your own to work. Get an extra set of front seat buckles and have the webbing on the female buckle lengthened. They have extra plastic parts on them, a sleeve to protect it from the side panel and a loop to keep the unattached end from flying around.

Rear shoulder belts were also an option. I have only seen one car with those.

Edit: Mine are original, I have the deluxe seatbelts so my lap belts are the narrower buckles and the convertible shoulder belts are wide like the back seat belts.

Front AND rear shoulder belts were a very rare factory option as far back as the 1966 model year, even in convertibles. The Fisher Body Manual for that year will show how the belts attach. I have a friend with a very rusty 1967 GTO convertible that has front and rear shoulder belts.

I was working with Steve Pekrul at seatbelt planet a couple years ago. He was very helpful. I ended up not being able to do the project at that time but if I do it this year, I will contact him again if he still works there.
