2 69s in the works

i found a 69 Cutlass and a 69 442 back on 01-07-06. the 442 is a 4 speed car but sit outside for at least 16 years. it was sank to the dirt when i looked at it in 06. he didn't want to sell it at the time because he said he would restore it someday. i called him about 2 or 3 years after i looked at them and he still didn't want to sell them. well, i decided to call him again today and he wants to sell them now. he calls the cutlass a parts car but from what i remember of the 2 cars, the cutlass is in much better condition then the 69 442. we still have to figure out a price but i may have 2 more soon. it is fun to do this stuff but at the same time it is sad. if he would have sold them to me 6 years ago, maybe there would be more worth saving on it.

he lives an hour away from me and i didn't get pictures in 06. i will likely be looking at them soon, even if i don't buy them. i will get pictures then. i have a feeling the 442 will not be restorable but we will just have to see.

lol, if you count the hour invested to the money made.... sometimes i don't even know if it is worth it. BUT IT SURE IS FUN!!!! the longer i do this stuff the more i understand why the big time guys want so much for there parts.

also... me and my dad missed out on 2 GREAT 70 W-30s in the 90s from not being persistent, one of those i am still trying to track down.

Still working on them. oldspackrat beat me to a couple cars tonight LOL, so it made me want to revisit these. I called the guy again tonight. I have tried to call him regularly since September but he would never answer the phone. Now he did and ask me to make a cash offer and he was happy with it. 2006 till now but i hope it is worth the wait. Now the ground is so soft that i will have to let it freeze or dry out to get them.

Update.... He said the ground is dry right now so I am going to attempt to get them this week. At this point nothing would surprise me so I am not holding my breath.

Not that many of you are interested in this but I feel like this thread is a good example for you guys of how much time we put into these cars and parts. I have a trip in 2006 just to locate them, then years of phone calls. Now it will be two 4 hour round trips to get them, gas for those trips, and then part them out. In the end, I will wonder why I did all the work for no more than I will make, lol. It is an addiction and alot of fun so ya.... It will be worth it.

If you part the 69 442 4 speed car I would like the carb and distributor if the price is right, numbers have to match 69 442 4 speed.
I'm also looking for a stock black steering wheel or deluxe black steering wheel. May be other parts as well.
Thanks
Bernhard

Mission accomplished!

Took 7 years to get it done but now I own them. I can say for sure, It is better to be a barn find than a barn yard find. I have a 10,000 lb winch and it would not move the 442. I had to dig out behind it and put a pulley block on the cable to make it 20,000 lbs. I thought I was going to rip the car in half to move it. I still have to go back and get the 442 in the morning. The 442 was in this spot for close to 20 years he said. He got it in 73 and showed me several pictures of when he got it.

I would like to see it stay together but not likely going to happen. Floors, doors, fenders, quarters, trunk pan, trunk lid, hood, roof, core support, bumpers and cowl are all junk. Almost guaranteed that the engine will be locked up tight. It would almost take a VIN swap to make it live and I will not let that happen. That is what this guy was planning to do with the two cars. I will look it over real good before i part it to be sure. If there is a chance for it to live I will not part it.

Got the 442 home. It is very original but has a VERY junk body. Doors, hood and trunk are all rusted shut. The frame is rusted out also. Has lots of great parts. I will have to decide what I am doing with it.

open face alternator
TM posi
4 speed console with NO cracks of any kind
Complete 4 speed setup
400 engine with correct carb.
Lots of good stuff and correct numbers but not a car that can be restored.

Oh, that CAN be restored.
If you do part it out, there was a guy recently seeking the open face alternator core I have, which I still cannot find, 3 months later. It disappeared into the quagmire, literally. I think, though, that I had his contact info in ROP PM's, which are now all gone.

PS a "10,000 lb" winch does not typically apply 10,000 lbs of tensile pulling force. If you read the tiny writing carefully, it's typically stated that it "can" move a 10,000 lbs ROLLING LOAD. Up no hill. No trailer ramps. Oh, and we all know that "rolling" resistance varies more than a little. I.e., rolling a new restored car on highly pressurized tires on concrete is very different from dragging a flat-tire car out of the mud behind the barn, where typically at least one of the wheels does not even turn at all.

You've obviously never seen a car from Nova Scotia. That is in the same shape as a 10 - 12 year old daily driver up here......

Kidding.......but honestly, I've seen much worse cars get restored around here. And they didn't have any of the value of that one. I've seen a mid 80s K-car in worse shape get restored. Not in show condition, but daily driver condition.

I've replaced entire floors in fox body Rustangs. And to me, they are about as valuable as a mid 1980s Tempo, but for some reason people around here go crazy for them.

I would love to get my hands on those two cars. I've always loved the 69 442/Cutlass. There used to be a blue with white interior 69 a few miles from here. I wanted the car, but I couldn't afford it at the time. That's probably been 15 years ago or so, by now.

I know I could save that 442. I've done much, much worse. I'd love to see some pictures of the floor after you get the interior out of it. Even if the frame is shot, if the Cutlass frame is half decent, you could use that one. Or take the best pieces out of the two.

I can't even begin to imagine someone trying to restore this car. maybe I should list it and just let it go and save myself the work of parting it out. I will likely keep the alternator for myself. I thought I had the original to my W-30 but not so sure it is correct now. I will likely just use this one. The pictures must look better than it is because there is not a single body part good.

I wish that were true but I have much more than that in them. 7 of them are nice and the other one has a slight bend that is restorable.

You guys have filled my PM box with requests. Instead of replying to all the PMs now, I will at least say here that I need a little more time to decide what I am going to do. If someone was restoring a 69 442 that was missing many of the parts, This would be a good car for them because all the hard to find parts are in one place. I also plan to start on my W-30 next month so I won't have a lot of time to part it.

I'm glad you finally got the cars. I've been calling a guy for the last 17 years on a 66 GTO, 389 4bbl 4 speed car that would have been save-able, but not now. The car has been sitting outside since 1994 & it's getting pretty ruff to say the least. He said he would sell it for a lot of money, but never gave me a price. What is his definition of a lot of money ? Who knows, but he sounded like it would take way more than what the car is worth to me. The car is too far gone to save, nothing good as in body panels, the drive train is the only thing worth saving. The rear of the frame has rusted off not far behind the rear axle and the trunk pan & gas tank gone... Rusted away. !!! The only reason I keep calling back my brother is a GTO man, so just trying to pick it up/save/parts for him. One good thing , the car is only 20 miles from me, so maybe one day I'll get the car. I might call him today, never know might get lucky...

It looks like the quarter panels are still good, except for the bottom. Same with the fenders. I'd think the worst part would be the floor and the trunk and you can buy all those parts for these cars.

You're probably right that it's much worse than the pictures are showing....but I saw a 68 442 on Kijiji up here that the body was so much worse than this one, except they'd cleaned it up a little bit and put primer on the rusted areas. They were selling it for over 5,000. I think the floor wasn't as bad as the car you have, but it still needed a couple floor pans because there were pin holes where the front driver and passenger's feet are.

Did you try to roll over the engine to see if it was seized?

I have not tried yet. I hooked a battery to it but the ignition isn't working. I have not put a breaker bar on it yet. The oil don't have any water in it.

That's a good sign. But then again, if the cylinder walls rusted from years of non-use, it will still lock up.

I just put a bar on it and it will not turn over. I will pull the plugs and have a look inside the cylinders. I am very allergic to rust. I am having fits trying to do anything to this car. I think I may have to get rid of it because of the rust issue.

Crap....that sucks! I've seen engines unstuck by putting diesel fuel in the spark plug holes and letting it sit for awhile, but I have a feeling those cylinders have been rusted for years and it'll take more than a little diesel fuel to unstick it. She was neglected for way too long. What a sin.
