1983 delta 88 rearend
#5
Don't waste your time and money on the small 26 spline axle in your Delta. Both Delta's I've owned have had open 2.73 26 spline axles in them (factory code GU2 on the trunk lid)
Get your hands on a new rear axle from an 88-96 Chevy Caprice. Up to 87 they used a "Gov lock" which isn't too good when you start putting power to it. 88 to 96 used a posi-trac unit. The 9C1 rear end has 3.08 posi rear and is an 8.5 rear end with 30 spline axles.
The only draw back is the Chevys had a 5x5 bolt pattern so your wheels will not fit. Pending on the current wheels on your Delta (steel wheels with wheel covers) you could get, maybe with the axle itself, steel wheels in a 5x5 bolt pattern and just throw your tires on those rims. Still researching the rear brake systems thou. I've read that you cannot put rear disc on these cars and have the stock brake system work correctly. I've also read that the rear disc can be put on, if the rear calipers are smaller than the front, you'd be in good shape.
The thrid option is to get the housing, gut it, and buy stock axles for it from Summit with the 5x4.75 bolt pattern and get 3.42 or 3.73 gears for the carrier. If not, go to Summit and buy the wheel adapters from 5x5 to 5x4.75 which are about $125 a pair.
3.42's with a 400th tranny on a 350 Olds. Car ran at almost 3000 RPMs at 70 MPH and I didn't like it
