1974 toronado 455

Hi guys may be buying a 455 out of a 1974 toronado to rebuild , not sure what it’s going in yet but most likely an a or g body olds . It’s has the turbo 400 attached which I don’t need , and I believe the oil pans are configured differently . I see that the starters are on the passenger side of these motors .does this pose a problem installing it in an a-body?are there others things I should know about this changeover?

The starter mounts to the trans on Toros not the block so that won"t be a problem, the LH starter bolt holes are still there. The toro trans is a Th425 not a 400. You'll have to get a std oil filter adapter for rear wheel drive cars that points the filter straight down, the toro ones angle the filter forward & it will be in the way of the engine cross member, exhaust manifolds, headers, etc. They're easily available aftermarket. Also are you going to be using a stick or auto trans. The '74 block may or may not have the mounting boss for the z-bar stud.

Be aware that the Toronado is a front wheel drive vehicle and uses a TH425 transmission.

Great info . Thank you, more than likely an automatic behind it .if I buy this engine I would assume there may be people interested in the toro parts I don’t use . Thanks again

All good info in this thread. I'll just add a few things.

The Toro oil pan will fit in an A-body chassis just fine. I don't know about G-body fitment, but I suspect that is also fine.

The 1974 motor will have soup bowl sized dishes in the pistons, J heads, and small valves.

I suspect this is an FA block, so no provision for the Z-bar pivot ball.
