1973-1977 Trailer hitch datas

Good morning from Austria,

i hope you can maybe help me with my problem.

I have a Cutlass Supreme from 1977 and i would like to have a trailer hitch on it.
Now i have the problem, i can't find any official documents from GM/Oldsmobile about the towing capacity and the nose / tongue weight. Only brouchures and thats nothing officialy.
I need these 2 data for our government to register the trailer hitch.
I hope you can help me with my problem.
Maybe you have some documents which you can send me.
Greetings from Austria
Simon

You might look for some information from Uhaul. They sold lots of hitches. Just a thought.

Oldsmobile did not sell factory trailer hitches, but they did publish a trailer towing guide every model year, which provided the trailer weight limits for each model and the required or recommended equipment for towing that weight trailer. A copy of the guide for the 1977 model year is on ebay right now.

You can pretty much make out the data for a 1977 Cutlass. Note that the max recommended trailer weight was 4,000 lbs. Additional equipment such as HD cooling, engine size, rear axle ratio, etc are also covered, depending on trailer weight. Also note that an equalizing hitch is recommended for trailers over 2,000 lbs.

GM didn’t always publish specific towing capacities for older models like the ‘77 Cutlass Supreme. I’d recommend checking with a GM dealer for any official documentation they might have, or possibly contacting a local restoration shop with experience—they might have access to more detailed info. Best of luck, and I hope you get it sorted soon!

Odd that you have to register a trailer hitch. Do they tax you on that, as well?

No, you don't have to pay any taxes. However, in Europe/Austria, all changes to the vehicle must be type-approved. Unless the parts have an "E" mark.

If you scroll up and look at the 1977 Towing Brochure that I posted above, they absolutely DID publish towing capacities. Olds did this for every model year, at least back into the mid-1960s.
