Can you restart it after it dies?

yes it restarts pretty well, It dies as soon as I put it in Reverse or drive but it stays on for awhile in neutral and park.

You posted this same thing in four different forums (at least, that's how many I counted). I realize that there are multiple places where it would be appropriate to post a question like this. Pick one of them. You need to post it only once, and it'll get seen by more people that you can imagine.

As mentioned above no duplicate posts.

Now to solve your problem you only need two things for the car to run... fuel & spark. When you start it you have both then it dies. That means one of the two is no longer present.

Check your fuel & spark delivery & you will be on the right path. I would start with a weak fuel pump and then move onto other fuel factors.

First thing to do is to replace your fuel filter.

Start with the basics. Once the engine stops running, does it still have spark? Is the choke opening correctly? Once it dies, how long before it will start again. Fill in the blanks and maybe we can help.

Yup. Spark, Fuel, Compression, Timing. That's all there is.

Obviously Spark and Fuel are the most likely to change over two minutes.

Check 'er out and let us know what you find.

Okay, i ~think~ I found all of these and consolidated them...
Please do not post same thread in multiple sections. I left them here in the Cutlass section until we can narrow into a cause of your problem. From there I can move it to wherever needed.
I hope we can help you solve your problem.

I'd think, since it runs for a while, the sock in the tank is almost clogged solid, and restricting flow about 95%
Pump is usually good or bad, and fuel filter clogged solid or not.
Sounds like this car sat a long while.

had this at one time on a pontiac 6000,it would run good with no load on engine, found the pressure regulator in the fuel rail had failed,i found the problem by pinching off the fuel return line, had to replace the the fuel rail, the spring for the regulator fell out when i remove the rail, never did find the ball.

Sputtering to a halt is symptomatic of a fuel issue on a carbed engine. Electrical tends to be instant off

I vote for broken wire at HEI pickup coil. When it moves just right, no go.

Pull 1 plug wire at plug, put a spare plug or spark ckr on that wire. Run her on 7, with a helper. Watch the spark as your helper induces the fail to run. As the engine dies you will know right away if it lost spark... then follow the road that seems appropriate.
