1972 Cutlass Exhaust Build

Hello friends!

I have a 1972 Cutlass Supreme Conv. that currently has a Olds 350/Th350 combo. Mark is building me a Olds 350 (bored/stroked to 434ci), and I'll be mating it with a TH400.

I'm going to be re-doing my entire exhaust system, thus, I need some long tubes for a 350 Olds, that DO NOT HANG super low, as the car is also lowered 2 inches:

I'd prefer stainless steel, and I heard Kooks are amazing but hang too low. Is this correct? I currently have Hedman shorties on my stock 350, but the build quality (welds) of them are terrible. I had to return the first set I got as there were breaks in the welds, and my current set I'll be returning as well for the same thing. Not too sure if I want to get another Hedman set, to be honest.

And... I know this is a common question, but all the searches come up basically Kooks or Hedman. But Kooks apparently hang too low, and now I'm cautious with Hedman products :/

Have you considered the stainless Thronton shorties with Ram Air Restorations 2.5" down pipes? Add mufflers of choice with Flowmaster 2.5" tail pipes to finish. Sucks about the Hedman, Sanderson went through the same issues though my 3 sets were Ok.

I would like to get long tubes as the engine build will be aggressive, and I currently have shorties on my stock 350 block.

As of now, it seems like my only choice is American Racing Headers, but $$$!

Expensive, but worth every penny, they fit!

I never had any problem w/ Super Comps on small blocks. Always seemed to tuck right up tight to floor, radius as high as it can be going past fire wall. The one time I had Hedmans (many, many moons ago) I thought those hung low.

The 2" lowering makes it much harder. I realize shorty's give up power. How is the clearance with your current Hedman's? Those hang considerably lower than my Sanderson's, like 2.5" less ground clearance. The Sanderson's with nice tight bends on the 2.5" custom pipes barely have enough clearance on crappy roads on my G body. On my 70S, a ton of room, apples to apples, I moved the G bodies exhaust straight over. The Hooker headers sound like the best bet. I had a set of A body Flowtech ceramic coated inside and out headers. I didn't have them on an A body, I had them on a 78 1/2 ton. Talk about pure garbage. Thin warping flanges that required double gaskets and still didn't seal perfect. Pin holes of rust all over then peeling with rust underneath as well within a year.

Not sure if this is right for your build but it worked great for mine.

I bet they do! You usually get what you pay for (and I hate saying that phrase).

Do you need to get a smaller starter or anything with the American Racing Headers?

Good to know - based on my past and recent experiences with Hedman headers, I will NOT be buying any more products from them.

I know it does :/

The clearance is fine for the shorty's I have on now - but since they dump downwards, the pipes still hang low since you have to create a hard 90 degree angle to aim the pipes towards the rear of the car. As long as my future long tubes don't hang any lower than my current set-up is now, I should be fine.

Seems like those are the Hooker's to get for ground clearance! Those look really nice.

The ARH headers were designed around a Power Master starter.

Is that a smaller than OEM starter? I just replaced the factory starter with another OEM-style replacement :/

What about the Hookers?

Yes, smaller, and much lighter starter.

Thanks for that heads up - do you know if that is the same case for the Hookers?
