I am trying to find the vehicle history for my 1971 Cutlass. I know the vehicle was salvaged in 1987 and put back on the road in the same year. My VIN # is 342671M221283. I tried multiple sites but can't seem to find anything. Does anyone have any ideas on how to find any records?

Unless you can find previous owners, you're probably SOL.

Yeah. You won't. This may be hard to believe, but in those prehistoric days before the internet, these records were kept on PAPER, were not in a central location, and usually got thrown away after a fixed period of time.

 

Try DMV. I used California's DMV website and requested a history for my VIN. It listed out three of four previous owners. I had the protectoplate and some paperwork for the first owner. I called up the second owner's son, who confirmed his dad bought it from the original owner (in Colorado). I don't know how the car got from owner one in CO to owner 2 in CA as the father is "forgetful". Luckily owners 2 and 3 had unusual names so I could White Page find them and I called them. Owner 2 freaked out I was calling about a car his dad had 30 years ago.
