1970 Rally pack. How to change face plate on cluster??

Trying to install new face plate from the Parts Place on an original rally pack. The original gauge mechanism is riveted to the face plate. Do I take a small drill & drill out the rivets & then maybe use some tiny screws & nuts to install on the new faceplate? I called the Parts Place for technical assistance & they said they've never had a question about how to swap them out & couldn't provide any help. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's ran into this issue. Any help or advice is welcome.

It doesn't look like you have any choice. Are the needles held on the same way or are those screwed on?

I've used those on clocks, but they came in the kit. You have to drill them and get new ones. Look on ebay, maybe 1/16" rivets, hollow or tubular. Not pop rivets. Then you peen them from the back, it's tricky! Maybe these? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rivets-For-G...9a786f&vxp=mtr

Interesting - just noticed how different the lettering is on the repro's compared to OEM. What are those dark spots on the PP faceplate?

Allan,
Not sure what those dark spots were. They wiped right off with a clean cloth though. Yeah the letters look a little to fat compared to original. The needles look like they can be pulled off the stem?

mrolds,
Thanks for the link, I emailed him about some dimensions.

Don't be impressed yet. These are for a customer. The ones I got from you are on the agenda though.

Not sure on that Scott. I know the speedo indicator comes off like that, but not sure what's up with staked on needles.

Okay maybe i am screwed up!! That isn't really the rally pack!! And that whole housing is interchangeable with a regular non rally pack gauge set. My opinion was!! The tic tok clock with rpm gauge was the rally pack!! JMO

The oil pressure and temp. gauge were part of the rally pack. It replaces the warning lights.

So you are saying that all non rally packs all you get is warning lights on the fuel gauge component cluster?

That would be a true statement. U21 Rallye pac is well documented as what Eric stated.

Like winning the lottery only if you know you won! I had a needle fall off my temp gauge a long time ago. I just pushed it back on, it seemed the same as a speedo needle, it's stayed there for over 15 years. The bigger prob would be getting the needle back in the right position.

Just for clarity - the U21 rallye pac was first introduced in 1967 and looked like this which is why you might have thought it was all in one gage cluster

It evolved in 1968/69:

to form the basis of what we commonly know as this (70-72) version photo courtesy of Robb Young on this site who discovered how to brighten the RP for night operation:

In 1973 - 1977 the Rallye Pac was reduced to just the 3 gage cluster for Fuel, oil, and temp. That may be a source of some peoples confusion about this option??

The U21 continued as a popular option with the addition of a voltmeter to the cluster well up into the late 80's AFAIK. I had them in my 82 Cutlass Supreme T top.

It also was offered in a different style for the Omega's as well as other brands.

Gauge face replacement

Oldspackrat -

I am looking to do a faceplate swap on the gauges myself and was hoping you'd share your conclusions on the replacement of the rivets. I assume they had to be drilled out. Do you have suggestions on the replacement rivets?

Any tips on the removal/replacement of the needles? Were they screwed on or staked?

And finally, I need to re-do the faded needles. Have you used the speedo paint pens for sale all over EPay with any success?

Many thanks
