1970 OAI base

How do I tell for sure if I have the proper OAI base for a 1970 442. The one I have Has five holes in the base bottom and two large holes on the sides where the rubber grommets go for the vent tubes to the valve covers. My spout is 9" in length. Problem is the rubber grommets that go into the sides are not lining up right for the vent pipe to the valve covers. I have two different vent pipes one measures 5.5" and one measures 6.5" and I cant get either one to work correctly on both sides. Can get the passenger side ok with the smaller vent pipe but then the drivers side is way to short a distance for either pipe. Thanks for any input-------Greg

I "think" the '70 snorkle has a small, 7/16"? hole in the end of the snorkle on the bottom.

Your air cleaner base looks right. So I'm trying to brainstorm on why your having problems. When I looked at the parts place ad on ebay it looks like there's different rubber elbows. Short ones for the 350, and longer ones for the 455 since its intake is wider. Could it be that you have the short elbows? Here's a link with a photo of the two different ones. John

That shows two of the larger elbows that go into the base of the air cleaner, my illustration catalog shows a small elbow on the drivers side of the base and a large elbow on the passenger side. I think this is where im having trouble getting it hooked up as i have two larger elbows in the base Going to try a small one on the drivers side and see if that lines things up. Also there seems to be two or more sizes of the vent tubes that go from the base to the valve covers. Not sure what is the correct size to use-----thanks----Greg

You need BOTH metal pipes to be the same length and they are fairly specific to the 442 and/or OAI air cleaners.

As you mentioned, there are two DIFFERENT rubber elbows (different lengths) that fit into the side/perimeter of the base but the pipes themselves are both the same.

If you don't have the correct pipes, Inline Tube sells them and they are a very nice/correct reproduction of the originals. PN INL12015 and $15 each.

Do you know the correct length these should be ?? Measure straight across tip to tip. I have one that is approx. 5.5" and one 6.5" in length

Is your car a 4 speed? I believe that only the 4 speed has hoses that connect on both sides. The auto cars connect the pcv on the drivers side through a rubber hose to the front of the carb.

Is the car a 442 or a W30? Randy is correct......an auto 442 would use only ONE pipe. 4 spd would have TWO.

W30s had TWO - autos and 4 spds.

Pipe length is 5-7/8" with a tape measure laid flat over/across the longest parts end to end. I'm not bending the tape measure over the top of the curve in the pipe. Lay the pipe down and lay the tape measure over it - longest distance

OK - your car, as you've probably already surmised, uses TWO pipes....same length/part number. Both being the 5-7/8" length. Again, ILT sells a very nice repro that is correct in length, looks, etc.
