1968 Hurst Olds
1968 Hurst Olds
Hi all,
I am the owner of some W Machines, however my favourite Olds has always been a 1968 Hurst Olds. I had been looking for the right 68 Hurst Olds for many years. Last year my dream came true as I found a documented, numbers matching , original paint 68 Hurst Olds!!! It still has all the Hurst Olds specific parts, It is a car that is on the Hurst Olds Registry - they just didn't know about its existence today. This Hurst Olds still has its original spare tire in the trunk. The car has never had any sort of body work done to it what so ever. It is truly an original!
I purchased the 68 Hurst Olds from the original owner who purchased the car from Acey Oldsmobile in New York, NY back in May of 68. The car had been parked in the original owners garage since 1986 with 46,737K miles. It is the non A/C version of the Hurst Olds so it has the 3.91 gears. It has an AM radio and a black plastic steering wheel. It was ordered without the wood wheel. Some of the original paperwork that I received with the car include ordering paperwork, owners manual with POP, some time slips from West Hampton/Suffolk County Raceway on Long Island (best slip 11.97), a broadcast card, and all the registration/insurance slips from 1968 - 1986! All the original paperwork was stored in the glovebox for all these years.
The car has lots of track history from its days at West Hampton/Suffolk County Raceway on Long Island. It still retains stickers on both quarter windows. The stories the original owner shares and remembers are just incredible. We have become good friends and communicate on a regular basis. He is a 73 yr old retired dentist who purchased the 68 Hurst Olds when he was 27. His dental practice was in New York City. He purchased the car one day while on a lunch break from work. The car still has its working dealer installed alarm which can be turned on and off by using a key that fits into a lock cylinder which is located on the drivers fender. He said the alarm was necessary because he was in New York City. This Hurst Olds was the families "daily" driver for the first 10 years of its life. The car still has a baby seat harness in the backseat. The quote from the original owner was, " I'd wash and get the car ready on Saturday, race the car on Sunday, and drive it to work on Monday." Thanks for making my dream come true Dr. E!!!
Have a great week!
Cheers,
Sam

Congrats on the 68 Sam! Looks like a great find. I have made many passes down the quarter in westhampton raceway. My current 65 club coupe was raced there many years. It's a shame we no longer have any drag strips here anymore. We also had National speedway here also. Good luck with the car.
Some more pictures...

Sam, this thing is the find of a lifetime. Thanks for continuing to share the pictures with us. It's especially neat to see an engine with the original paint still on it, not a lot of those floating around. Been a lot of debate over what true "olds engine red" was like.
Dave,
I pretty much stay to myself when it comes to my cars as you know.
With this 68 being an original numbers matching and original paint car, I thought it could be used as a good reference for folks who are restoring their cars. This car has never had any kind of body work done to it, ZERO.
To date, since I have mentioned this car in public I have been able to help a few individuals.
I helped Wade in Alabama with the exact locations of the fender emblems. His family has had their car since new. What a story that is! I have also helped individuals on FB with the exact measurements of the white pin stripes at various locations. I posted the pictures on FB for everyones reference.
So, I came out a year later with this 68 Hurst Olds because I thought I would share and help others instead of hiding it in my garage.
Another story to come very soon

Thanks for asking and have a great day.

Sam I still think you should generically post this on carsinbarns.com. Though I do understand the privacy thing, especially these days. You can post without names...Most of the stories on the site dont have happy endings like this. Ill bet it will make the calendar next year no problem. We thank you for showing this GEM. Id trade mine in a heartbeat for one.
