1966 Toronado Radiator Core support question / help

Im getting my '66 back on the road and bought a new repro battery tray only to realize the old tray is completely rusted away (it was an after market one), and part of my Core Support is rusted and needs some refab work. My question is what is this area supposed to look like??? I see a U channel type area near the "wall" of the core support with a vac hose for headlight running down it. Is this channel supposed to be covered with another layer of metal?? If so its seriously rusted but for some reason looks more or less like its supposed to be this way. A pic of that area without the battery installed would be great so I have something to go by! The area where the headlights actuator goes is kind of wobbly and needs to be braced etc. THANKS in advance!!
