I read an article a long time ago on that car, quite a head turner.

I was looking thru an old Hemmings from 2009. That 442 was their car of the year. It mentioned that story from 1981 so I looked it up.

Many thanks for the post

Hey, many thanks for posting the article, which I wrote many years ago for The Philadelphia Inquirer Sunday Magazine. This remains one of my all time favorites. Richard Brigidi made my day. (I'll admit I was a little premature estimating when the V-8 would die.)

Great story! I grew up in the 80s when muscle cars were cheap.....although I didn't get one then . I do remember the night my dad raced his slightly modified 64 Tbird against my uncle's brand new 82 trans am. Dad left my poor uncle slack jawed and embarrassed by the end of first gear. Oh yeah....dad had paid all of $200 for that old Ford.

Wow, that story sure brings back memories of the L69 I owned back in 1968. Fastest thing on 4 wheels for miles around.........

Oh yes, memories. I'm 2 years younger than Richard Brigidi but having an older Brother we lived for street racing during the 1960s/early 70s. Pretty much the standard story here also.

what a great story and thank you for posting.some very familiar situations in there bringing me back to 1972 when i purchased my first oldsmobile-a 1965 442,4 spd that i street raced the wheels off .i'll never forget a 69 dart gts pulling into the mammoth mart parking lot where we hung out asking where the fastest car in town was and i answered you are looking at it,he says "there is no way the fastest car in this town is an oldsmobile"he got a good look at my tail lights .i often wondered why a bone stock 400,4 spd with 3.55s was blowing the doors off modified road runners, mustangs etc.the car ran 13.6 with slicks.replacing the 400 a couple years later with a 1970 w30 455 and 3.91s brought the et to 12.61.thanks again!

Thanks for sharing, and to Bob for writing , that article, great stories !

Richard brought his red 442 convertible to our Fall all Oldsmobile show in Downingtown, PA a couple of times. I got the pleasure of seeing the car in person and also speaking with Richard for a bit. One nice guy and he could not believe a "young" guy like me was into these 60's musclecars ! Unfortunately he passed away 2 years ago, rest in peace, Richard.

Tva442, even though it was sad to hear, thanks for posting about Richard’s obituary. He had great history with his 442. Time passes fast, enjoy the moment.

Did not want to put a downer to reliving the old days in this thread, but thought should let everyone know. Yes, live in the moment !

I am too young for then, 39 this past Wed. My 442 I got as a project with my graduate school buddy back in 05. Most guys of my dad's age got rid of their cars. My old man has faithfully kept his 71 Corvette he bought slightly used in 71 from a guy deploying to Korea off their Air Force base in Little Rock. That corvette sits patiently in the garage under a car cover for his trips to car shows every few weeks. The extra padding we put over it religiously from 86 to 15 is no longer done, as our series of 3 cats for mousing and company has ended with the departure of the last one, much missed, then. I worry about him being 73 and navigating central FL traffic with a murky window in the rag top and many bright headlights that low. I've offered my Monte Carlo for temporary trade, if he wants something more comfortable, but it's up to him to decide when he wants to hang up that old race car. I'll receive/inherit it when he's done, but I'm in no hurry. It's just a stock ragtop 4 speed vette, original, worth about 25. It's got a Quadrajet back on it now, but he tells me the old Holley spreadbore I now have in a box up here raised the top speed from 125 to 135. He didn't tell me that until a few years ago....
