1965 442 4sp. Neutral safety switch

Is there a neutral safety switch on a 65 442 stick shift car?

First of all, no manual transmission Olds ever had a "neutral" safety switch. They had a CLUTCH safety switch that required you to press the clutch in to complete the starter circuit.

Second, the clutch safety switch was not used until federally required in the 1969 model year. Prior to that, GM assumed drivers were intelligent enough to press the clutch in when starting as a matter of course.

I have converted my auto to 4 sp. Car won't start with the key but starts with a remote starter to the purple and the battery lead to the starter.

Well, did you bypass the NSS from the automatic trans shift linkage? Factory manual trans cars in 1965 had a jumper across the two purple wires in the connector that USED to go to the AT NSS.

I'm guessing your backup lights don't work either...

Thanks Joe, I was thinking it had to be something with the auto nss. I haven't got that far to see if the back up lights work yet. I was looking for the wire connector under the dash to plug the wire feed from the back up switch though. I just started the fresh rebuild of the original motor and the rebuilt Muncie and getting the few bugs out.
