1964 442 question

I imagine this seller is just blowing smoke as sellers often do, but thought I would ask to be sure. He says in the ad that it has factory adjustable rear upper control arms. Is that true?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oldsmobile-4...US_Cars_Trucks

Thanks,

Thanks,
I bought my 1964 442 new, The upper/lower control arms aren't on mine. and the bottom ones had a plate welded across the u-channel (for lack of better description) on the bottom. I have had Olds guys tell me that was only on the 442.

WOW, you bought it new! That's great. No better way to figure out the seller is full of bull.
Thanks, I always like learning,

I can't say for the 64's, but the 65's had the adjustable upper control arms on the rear, but only the 442. The lower boxed control arms, and sway bar were also a part of the 442 package. My guess is that the add is correct.

I don't know about the control arms, but why would a person go to that lever of detail on a car, and then not do anything to the inside of the doors? Look at the pic with the passenger door open, then look up and down the door seal at all the rust. Pretty sad to go to that level of restoration and just let the doors go.

There should be a rear sway bar, and I don't see holes in the lower control arms either. The 442 emblems are repops.
My 2 cents.

Good stuff Stan, live and learn. Hopefully some day I may see one, or maybe a picture.

Thanks,

Control arms aside, nice car, and nice colors! Although my '66 was red from the factory, I get sick of seeing so many red cars. Looks like it was originally Fern Mist with a Provincial White painted top, J-C.

And it's in Missoula, too.

"I guess it all blew up in Missoula
There just was no other way
After months of goin crazy, there was nothin left to say
But when the dust had finally settled
And the air had quickly cleared
Whoa, things were better off than I had feared"

Yeah, a fine point, "extra holes" and "adjustable control arms" are kind of confusing. What most folks think of an an adjustable CA would be one where its LENGTH is adjustable, not its mounting points.

A better term for that might be "442-type selectable C.A. mounting holes in the frame."

Because the CA itself... is NOT adjustable.

The reason for the extra set of holes is to adjust the pinion angle. In the 66 PIM(assembly manual) it shows were they go for the 442 models.

There was an adjustable upper arm used on Chevelles in 1964.

Most of that is the door panel. Inside the edge of the panel is a metal band that has the studs that snap into the door to hold it on. The vinyl is wore away and you are seeing that metal band.

Surprising to see the rust under the weatherstrip on the door. looks likes its the same on the trunk edge as well. They must have missed it. Looks like a nice car though..

In the 1970s I bought a pair of adjustable upper arms from Parts Dept. The bolts at the diff end were on eccentrics.

I know little about 64's, but I dig that ride

Is that straight up and down shifter OEM back in the day? Looks like you might have to reach a bit to shift vs the curved designs from the later 60's models. I agree that the rust is part of the metal edge band behind the door panel. Just a really cool car. I would love to compare the performance of a 64 vs the 70-442's that I grew up loving.

Good point.
