I can’t find any info on this car, but thought it was cool nonetheless. Is that glass top a photoshop, home built, a factory one- off or??? Anybody have any info on this? Please no crying like in the ‘62 Starfire pick-up thread that went south

I recently saw something on line about these transparent removable hardtops, and now I naturally can't find it. They were definitely real.

I recently read a pontiac discussion about cars with removable tops from this same time frame. I'll be darned if I can't find it as well. The discussion centered on the material the tops were made from. Besides clear acrylic, it was thought to be used in conjunction with gel coated fiber glass in body color...er two tone.

What I recently read, either here, or on the Facebook group was, these cars are called the Kennedy Starfires. The story goes that Jackie Kennedy wanted a car she could ride in with her hat on and not mess up her hair, so these were custom built for her and the roof is something like 2" taller. There were at least two made and possibly a third. There is at least one survivor as it was recently spotted at a car show, in California I think. That's all I know except this plastic is not bullet proof and it was never intended for security purposes. I think they may have actually been made by GM for her, on this point I'm a bit fuzzy.

Oh yeah, I just remembered that also the man in the passenger seat in the above photo was purported to be a GM employee who worked on the project who brought one home temporarily. The kid with the glasses is said to be his son.
