1961 Starfire hubcap install

I am new here and have a 1961 Starfire and can't seem to get the hub caps on. They were on when I bought the car and since I've had new tires installed I can't get the clips on to stay on the rim. I am "pounding" them on like a wheel weight. Is that the wrong approach or is there a trick??? Should the tire be deflated???
Thanks for any advice.

I always use a rubber mallet and no tire pressure has nothing to do with it.

If they are the "Deluxe" hubcaps, they have clips that are 1961 only and are made of that unfortunate material "Unobtanium" - I would venture a guess that someone tried to use clips that they thought might work - but none that I am aware of will work.

My father has a '61 Starfire as well and after years of trying, including trying to get them reproduced, gave up, removed the clips, and carefully drilled holes in the hubcap and the rim and secured them with high quality stainless steel screws. You would never notice them unless you knew they were there.
