1957 Olds Super 88 - Help with Pulling 371 Motor

Hi to all,
I am a new member to Classic Olds. I am doing a restoration on a 1957 Olds Super 88 4 door Holiday Sedan. It will be a body on frame restoration as the vehicle is in excellent shape. Front end is completely off, interior and underbody also striped of all components.

I am pulling the engine and transmission so that they can be remanufactured. Here's where I need help and have a question.
Has anyone pulled a 371 motor? The service manual does not describe actually pulling the engine out of the vehicle. There are no engine lift hook attachment points on the engine.
From other repair manuals I have for this time period suggests using slings to lift the engine out.

My plan will be to use two nylon 6000 pound slings. The front one going around the front to middle portion of the oil pan and the second one around the bell housing as I will be pulling the engine and trans as an assembly. Will also use a balance bar to stabilize the load.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated.

Joe

I have never pulled a 57 but have done a few 55-56's and the procedure would be the same.

I would use a chain on your lift rather than a strap and attach it by removing the bolts from opposite corners of the intake manifold. Use longer bolts and heavy washers than what you just removed to get full threads in the block. Adjust your balance by changing the position of the chain hook.

If you have removed all you say you have including the hood it will come out very easy. Keep a look out for any speedometer ground or electrical wires you may have missed...Tedd

I prefer 1 of these, it bolts to the manifold where the carb is mounted. You need to tilt the engine dramaticall with the trans still attached.

In conjunction with this:

That would work great but it sounds as if the whole front of the car has been removed, If that is the case it's mostly a direct up till the distributor is close to hitting the firewall and pull it forward thing....Tedd

Somehow I wouldn't trust that plate with a 750 pound engine AND a 250 pound transmission still attached

The plate is pretty stout, I do it all the time. You can run the chain as Ted stated and use the leveler with it.

59, I am like you, I just have never trusted on of those carb plates especially on an aluminum manifold. Eric, I don't know how you use the plate with the leveler.

Sorry, mine is a bit different than the one I pictured has hooks at the end of the chains. Never had any issues.
