What happens if you unhook the yellow coil wire at the + terminal of the coil while the engine is running?

 

The car EXPLODES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, naturally, you run the risk of the Johnson rod disambiguating with the encabulator.

... And also, you may have a hard time starting, as you will no longer have straight 12v bypassing the resistor when you crank the engine.

So if the car is running and you unhook the yellow wire, it continues to run just fine, it just won't start again after you shut it down?

 

It MAY start just fine. It may take more cranking before it starts. It may not start at all - all depending on timing and carb settings, carb and electrical condition, and weather.

Why are you so driven to disconnect this wire while the engine is running?

Is this like the little button that says, "DON'T PRESS THIS BUTTON?"

I'm looking for a good wire to interrupt for my second kill switch. I want one that will allow the engine to crank, just not start. But I also don't want to be driving down the highway and have the switch get accidentally hit (nothing is idiot proof) and have my engine die on me.

The previous owner of my old '71 had a switch that would do that. What was nice about it was that you could flip the switch after starting the car up at home and then the car would be protected when you arrived at your destination and no one could see where the switch was until you went to leave. I have no idea what wire that switch was hooked into, I should've checked it out before I sold the car, but hindsight is 20/20.

 

Then the yellow wire is not your wire.

You want to interrupt the connection from the heavy pink wire from the ignition switch, to the fuse block, to the resistance wire, to the coil, -- OR --
the wire from the coil to the distributor.
