why is one radio **** longer than the other?

I have a 1967 cutlass and took the radio out to do some work under the dash. When I took the ***** off I noticed that the right side rod where the **** pushes onto is shorter than the left side. Can anyone tell me why that is? Im trying to reinstall the radio and the back plate wont fit with the station ****

That's not correct. The right side shaft (for the tuning) should be close to the same length as the left side inner shaft (volume). Does the radio work like this? Can you manually tune stations?

I can only guess that the shaft was pushed in, or it was replaced at some point with the wrong part. The shaft needs to be longer to allow the rear "dummy" **** behind the tuner **** or the front/rear fader that would also be behind the tuner ****. And, if I'm not mistaken, the shaft that the dummy **** or fader sits on is a larger diameter shaft, just like the tone **** on the right.
