What's at fault ?

62 Starfire still with Gen erator and Voltage regulator. I'm experiencing surging of all lights at night as well as a fluctuation of voltage between 12 and 14 volts at the aftermarket meter when car is being driven. at idle all is well. THinking its the regulator. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a reg. How many miles on the genny and reg? Was it sudden or were there any previous symptoms? Has any work been done to the car? Check connections and grounds first. Check gen brush length and spring tension. Reg points may need filed. It could be either or both. If it has some miles on it they both may need an overhaul or replaced. If you go to a rebuilder, take both genny and reg.

Sounds more like the regulator than gen. If you're seeing 14 volts the gen is doing what its supposed to. The problem sounds like the regulator is wonky. Don't remember off hand if the 62 reg is adjustable. Check your CSM - it should tell you.

Thanks Guys. I'll start trouble shooting the reg first. You're making me think it may be as simple as loose wiring. THe gen was rebuilt in 02 when engine was rebuilt as well. 5k miles since then. Gen should be good but you never know.
