Question What is this?

Ok, this is going to sound pretty stupid, but...

I am replacing my brake booster ( bloody knuckles from the &$#&***ing mounting bolts) and found this behind it.

It appears to be connected to the post on the ignition key warning buzzer over the wheel well. From the bottom of it, a wire goes through the firewall. I was thinking it was a relay - but it doesn't look like it once I removed the rubber cover.

Any ideas or help appreciated!

it is a circuit breaker for accessories like power windows, convertible top, etc.

Circuit breaker? Like a resettable breaker? Or like a fusible link or something similar?

The reason I ask is that there is a 30 amp (new-style) fuse that comes off of the same stud on the buzzer and I thought that was going back to the convertible top motor...

what do you mean "new style"? there is a white plastic fuse holder for a glass fuse for the high blower relay. this is a self resetting circuit breaker. all the power accessories are fed from it unless someone has modified the wiring.

Not to break the mood of the moment, but in pic # two it appears that there are no shims behind the fender mounting tab ( near the cct breaker) and so the bolt is loose and the fender is moving around...

Hmm... By "new-style", I mean the newer, bladed style holder with matching 30 amp fuse. If I can get a pic of it tomorrow, I'll put it up. I think it is probably what's being used to run the top. Also, the wiring going from the bladed fuse is really heavy compared to the wiring in my pic there.

The harness in my car is a newer Painless one (has a label), but I guess it didn't include a setup for the convertible top???

no shims behind the fender mounting tab
@Yellowstatue - I noticed that there is "something" missing there and the fender is not 100% secure. How is this supposed to look? I mean, I need to find the right shims and bolt it down, but I have no idea how it was setup from the factory.

Thanks!

sounds like it was modified. the fuse may be running the top, etc. is the circuit breaker hooked to any thing now? the only problem with a fuse is if it blows when the top is half up you had best have a spare. the original breaker would reset and you could possibly get the top up.

Just fill the gap with shims if the the fender looks right and tighten the bolt and check gaps to be sure it is correct...cowl/windshield/door

Oh $h^%, I never really thought about that. Top halfway up would suck! I am going to buy a few extra 30 amp fuses... Tomorrow I'll see if I can follow the line into the body and see where it goes. I just have to know at this point.

So just to make sure, I can go ahead and use standard body shims? Like this kind: http://bit.ly/lIN748

Thanks again!

Those look correct to me...the alignment shims have little tabs on them...
