Trouble shooting a washer pump.

I have the two speed wipers on a 71 Cutlass, and cannot get the washer pump working. Tried trouble shooting today, but nothing definitive. There's 12v to the yellow wire, and no power to the blue wire when I push the dash switch. Could this be a bad wiper switch? The rest of the unit works fine, and the wipers park as they should. Does the plug need to be installed on the pump a certain direction? I've seen pics in some of the forums with the plug going one way or the other. Would appreciate any tips here, thanks. (p.s. don't say 'plant your corn early Jed', I've already heard that one.)

I am having the same trouble on my '68 4-4-2. I have power at appropriate connections at correct times. I've rebuilt the original pump - no good. I've replaced the pump - no good. My last thought - Do we need to prime the pump and line from the tank to the pump, I'm wondering?

You won't have power to the blue wire, its the ground signal fed from the washer switch on the dash to activate the pump.

Expressing my interest in this thread as my '71 CS wipers has a hiccup, as well.

Funny, I haven't reached the point where I want to shoot the pump but I'll be sure an post a video when I do.

Does anyone know if the pump wires need to go a certain way? (i.e. yellow and blue wires)

Thanks,

Is the pump not doing anything? From what I recall, there is a solenoid that energizes and causes an arm in the mechanism to be engaged by the cogged wheel that is driven by the wiper motor. Not much to it from what I remember.

Here's a picture I have of two different washer styles. My car has the top style.

Thanks,

Look at the couple of pictures I took of my 1971 CS convertible wiper motor assembly wires in this thread.

The pictures and explanations are helpful thanks. It looks like the wired plug for the pump can go in either direction, but the picture shows yellow (+) is on the right side, and the blue (-) is on the left. Not sure if there's a polarity issue here, but I'll keep plugging away with my Fisher Body Manual. I'm determined to get this figured out and working.

BTW, Ken, I think I have the 'round style' pump which is similar to the picture you posted. -Thanks

Ken & Eric - Look at my pictures in the link in Post #8 where I described each wire. Did I misrepresent any wires? Which wires are for the washer pump and which wires are for the wiper motor? Thanks!

I always thought but maybe I'm incorrect, when you PUSH the washer switch, it automatically turns the wiper motor ON, as well. Is that correct?

The wiper motor is what drives the washer pump, so yes the wiper would turn on when the washers are activated.

Finally determined the O.E. style pump from ACI (#172212) needed to be clocked to the wiper motor, but the washer pump was still intermitent. A big thanks to the AJS auto parts for refunding the original purchase price on that one. I now have a Balkamp (BK 6651536), which is an O.E. appearing - newer style pump. The diagram in the box calls for white and pink wires, but the OE harness has only the yellow and blue wires for the pump. I understand the newer pumps are popular and less expensive, I just need to know if it still works with my OE harness.
