Test fuel gauage out of car

Evening guys- I'm just finishing up my dash and wanted to test the fuel gauage. Guess I could do this with the sender unit on my bench I hope. Right now it's peged at full. Or should I send it to someone to test it for sure. Installing all new wiring but sure want to find out anything wrong now. Thanks as always!

Grounding gage wire will send your needle to "E" if your gage is working. Thats what yur tank unit does gradually. you can perform this with the tank wire in your trunk area where it has a connect in the harness before going to the tank. with wire unhooked and with ignition ON the gage should be pegged FULL. Ground the wire and watch the gage move to EMPTY. Hope this helps.

Hi Al.

The fuel gauge has two terminals.
One (green with white stripe) is hot (from the ignition switch IGN terminal)
One (pinkish) goes to the sender, and through its rheostat to ground.

When empty, the sender should show Zero resistance (be a short to ground).
At ½ the sender should show 45Ω.
At FULL the sender should show 90Ω.

So, if you connect the correct gauge terminals to hot and to the sender, and move the sender float, you should be able to get the right readings.

To test each separately, check the sender's resistance (terminal to ground) to see whether it corresponds to the above values, and use a 90Ω resistance between the gauge's sender terminal and ground to see it it reaches FULL.

Hope that made sense.

- Eric
