Tachometer Questions for 1969 Cutlass/442

I've tried sifting through the threads listing tachometer as a search and did not find any insight into a decent after market tachometer installation for my 1969 442. I would like to get information on which tach to buy and maybe some pics of installations and tips. I'm not adverse to column mounting if it is clean (no muffler clamp stuff) or would also appreciate in dash recommendations.

Thanks,
Randy

I use a Sunpro Super tach, not very expensive with a retro look.

Randy, this is the one I will use on the 70 one day. It may be like the one Eric has. It is a column mount unit, old school.

I mounted mine under the dash, but it can be mounted on the column or any where you see fit. Very simple install. I bought the white faced version.

Thanks guys. Not sure what I was expecting. I had replaced my clock on my 72 with a tach when I was younger and I was hoping it would be as easy on a 69 dash but some how I doubt it. I also seen a column tach install on a Chevy w/o a hose clamp and wondered what the alternatives were.

I used clock blanks on my 68 to install aftermarket Speedhut gauges. I removed the plastic lens, cut a circular hole in the center of the remaining black plastic blank, secured the gauge to the back of the blank and reinstalled it in the dash. Worked very well.

I'll post a pic so you can see how I did it, but it may be a minute. My dash is kinda buried behind the couch with Xmas stuff right now...

The only real difference between the 68-69 cars and the 70-72 cars is that the gauge pods are retained from the front on the later cars. You need to get under the dash to access the four screws that hold the pod to the dash, then it slides out the front.

Thanks again for everyone's input. I'll likely go with the old column mount route although I'll try to figure out an alternative to the worm clamp mounting.

You can always use a heavy duty cable tie.
