Single wire chrome alternator coversion
#2
Why do you want to do that? GM didn't install the extra wires just to increase their manufacturing costs. A stock 12SI three wire alternator is EXTREMELY easy to connect to the stock harness - you can even buy a plug-in conversion kit if you have an aversion to soldering irons.

Most of the single wire alternators do not excite or turn on until you get to about 1500 RPM but then do charge at idle. There is a set up that will do one wire and charge at idle. But Joe is right, the 3 wire set up is very reliable and if it goes out on the road you are not hunting for a one wire alternator to replace it.

I converted my alternator to the single wire alternator from Jegs. It was stupid easy to install and I'm very happy with it. I did it because I don't like wires running here and there under my hood (even though I keep everything loomed together with zip ties).
