Problem wiring hei distributor

Ok, found a 12volt source on fuse box in my 68 cutlass with the key on. Ran a wire from the dist to the box and my car wont start. I run a wire straight from the battery to the dist and the car starts right up. I tested the voltage @ the dist end and it read 11.89volts. I dont know whats going on. Can someone please help!BTW using 14 guage wire. Too small?
