Power top switch...

Hi all,
want to install a universal power top switch on a 71 cutlass, what should be the minimum amps rating for that switch ?
I saw on internet that I could use an isolation relay (that will take the heat) and use a lower amps switch (more model available).
Any tips or idea.?

Thanks

Correct replacements are available.

Thanks for the reply,
I know I could use the replacement, but I would also need the harness for it,
and the cost with shipping here in canada would be pretty high. So my client decide to
go with a universal one and the only one I found is this one....NEW 1971-1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Convertible Universal Top Switch | eBay
I believe that I can't go lower than 50 amps right ?

Thanks

As I recall the circuit breakers for that switch pop at >40 amps. That implies the switch needs something just below 40 amps.

From what I’ve seen Olds used fuses up to 30 amps and above that they used circuit breakers.

Either way, wire it through a safety device.

My convertible pump motor is protected by a 30A circuit breaker that has never tripped. In full disclosure, I have all new bushings in the top mechanism, and new pump and ram cylinders; an older set-up may draw more current.

Thanks everybody, I opted for the 50 amps switch instead of the 30 and will use the same wire.
