Mystery Relay

Any idea what this is? I found it behind the dashboard. Sort of a relay in a 35mm film case (yeah in the old days we used film). The 14g wires were tapped into the black and light blue of my wiper switch. The smaller 24gish? wires didn't look like they attached to anything at all. It is a mess in there so it is possible I pulled off a connection but I don't think so.

Could it be a home made intermittent wiper setup?

Possibly an alarm with an ignition disable function.

I don't think so only because it is wired in parallel, not in series. So I keep asking, what is this thing supposed to do when the wipers are on. Or perhaps what is it supposed to stop, when the wipers are on. Those 24g wires have me utterly confused. I can't imagine them running much of anything but a PC.

But of course, I have no idea what I am talking about!

It doesn't really look factory, but does this car by chance have the pulse wiper option with actuator button in the end of the column shift lever?

It is a floor shifter and it is aftermarket B&M. I don't know about this pulse option you mentioned but I am guessing it wasn't on floor shifters?

The caps inside it are too new looking for this to be anything factory.
My guess is an aftermarket wiper delay unit given the wires it was tapped into.
The small wires maybe went to a control pot that was remotely mounted.
Whether it actually worked or not is beyond any of us.

This would be my guess also.

Nope, none of you got it.

It's manufactured by www.Electricalfixits.com in Arkansas. They call it a 'Restrictor relay'. It can be installed in any vintage of car with little to no training by anyone who can cut wires, knows how to solder and wrap electrical tape. Electrical knowledge is not required and the instructions provided clearly show even a monkey could install it.

The relay has a purpose; it's intended to prove that factory technicians don't know jack about your ride. In real time, this unit is designed to add at least 2.3 hours to the repair estimate while techs look feverishly on the net or shop manuals for a reference while doing nothing to the car. Naturally since you're waiting you document this with your handy cell phone camera. Then you get to spend another 1/2 hour wasting the service advisors time telling them why you're not going to pay for wasted time by the tech. It's your form of retribution for the countless times a dealership has wasted your time and overcharged for something that was very obvious and simple.

This relay is best installed on cars that you have no intention of paying the bill for. Ok, how many of you actually clicked on that link??? Now, for all the really good techs out there, I hope you have a sense of humor.

Should be able to follow the wiring diagram, using the factory colors to deciper the circuit it's tied into.
